Many fans consider Puss in Boots: The Last Wish to be a standout film in the Shrek series. The 2022 movie centers on Puss grappling with his own mortality. A key reason the film connected with audiences was its villain, The Wolf, who was depicted as a sort of Grim Reaper. Actor Wagner Moura voiced the character, providing a formidable challenge for Puss. Though it wasn’t initially planned, DreamWorks has decided to bring The Wolf back for some holiday-themed content.
Although DreamWorks hasn’t officially announced his return, the villain from “Puss in Boots: The Last Wish” has reappeared thanks to a studio artist. Daria Khil created a new image of the Wolf checking his own version of a “Naughty List.” DreamWorks hasn’t said if or when we’ll see the animated Grim Reaper again, but the ending of the latest Puss in Boots movie suggests a possible return. While a new Shrek film is planned for 2027 with Shrek, Donkey, Fiona, and their kids, it’s currently unclear if Puss in Boots and his friends will be featured. You can see the new Wolf artwork below.
Puss in Boots And Sinners

Director Ryan Coogler recently shared that the villain from the animated film Puss in Boots: The Last Wish heavily inspired the vampires in his horror movie, Sinners. In a recent interview, Coogler explained that the animated film was a significant influence, specifically pointing to the villain, Death, and his distinctive characteristics – like his eyes and overall presence. For anyone who saw Puss in Boots, it’s easy to see how Death’s design informed the look and feel of the vampires in Sinners.
Although it hasn’t been officially announced, Puss in Boots and his companions might appear in Shrek 5, planned for release in 2027. The end of The Last Wish shows Puss and his friends traveling to the land of “Far, Far Away,” which is already filled with fairytale characters, so they would easily fit in. Given how beloved the wolf has become, many fans are hoping to see them return to the big screen beyond just holiday-themed artwork.
