The third installment of Dune, directed by Denis Villeneuve, will arrive in theaters this December, completing his adaptation of the classic science fiction novel. At the CinemaCon convention in Las Vegas, it was revealed that the film takes place 17 years after the events of Dune: Part Two, which was released in 2024.
Attendees at Warner Bros.’ CinemaCon presentation on Tuesday were the first to see the opening seven minutes of their new movie. Thanks to reports from those present, we can now share a detailed description of the exciting action teased in the footage. See the description below.
Dune: Part Three New Footage Reveals an Intense Battle
The scene starts with an alarm blaring on a spaceship as several smaller vessels descend onto a planet caught in a fierce storm. Immediately, lightning strikes and destroys one of the ships. These ships carry Fremen warriors, fiercely loyal to Emperor Paul Atreides, who begin a war chant as Stilgar walks among them, rallying them for the coming battle. As the ship’s ramp lowers, the Fremen remark on the rain. Stilgar leads them out, some carrying a strange rectangular device. He tells them to hold and then drop to the ground just as a burst of laser fire erupts, taking down several warriors.
Suddenly, a massive creature bursts from the ground, resembling a sandworm but equipped with lasers on its tail. Despite being hit by an explosion, the laser-equipped structure remains standing. Stilgar fires at it repeatedly, but his shots bounce off harmlessly. A soldier attempting to reach something far off is instantly vaporized by a laser blast. The creature begins to move, forcing Stilgar and his Fremen warriors to take cover. The scene then cuts to Paul (Timothée Chalamet) and Hayt, who is revealed to be a resurrected Duncan Idaho (played by Jason Momoa). Hayt bluntly tells Paul that he’s past the point of saving.
The film then shows a quick series of scenes: Anya Taylor-Joy looking at tarot cards, Chani and Paul meeting and Paul pointing a weapon at her while she questions what it means to be human, Paul and Chani standing apart, and finally, a massive sandworm.
New Dune Footage Reinforces it’s IMAX Demand
If you didn’t attend CinemaCon, you’ll likely have to wait for Dune: Part Three in theaters to see the footage. However, the excitement around the film and the high demand for IMAX screenings are definitely justified. Given that Dune: Part Three promises a huge and visually impressive experience, seeing it in the premium IMAX format is the best way to fully appreciate the epic scale and thrilling action.
