Giant Skull’s Dungeons & Dragons game has been cancelled because Hasbro ended its publishing agreement with the studio. Bloomberg reports that both companies confirmed the termination this week, after Wizards of the Coast, a Hasbro subsidiary, initially withdrew from the deal earlier in the year.
According to a company representative, the decision came after a careful review of the project’s progress. They also emphasized that the company continues to value its working relationship with Stig Asmussen, the head of Giant Skull studio and a respected figure in the industry.
According to a Wizards of the Coast representative, they evaluate ideas throughout the entire development process. They chose not to move forward with an initial concept from Giant Skull, but they highly regard Stig Asmussen and his team, and continue to have a strong working relationship with them.
I’m really happy to hear things are going well at Giant Skull! Asmussen just let us know that the studio is doing great, and he’s even looking into possible publishing deals and partnerships to get their projects out there. It sounds like they’re making some serious progress, which is awesome!
Asmussen founded Giant Skull in 2024. He’s a long-time game developer with experience on popular titles like God of War 3, Star Wars Jedi: Fallen Order, and Star Wars Jedi: Survivor. He started the studio after leaving Respawn Entertainment in September 2023. The team includes many experienced developers from well-known companies such as Riot Games, Rocksteady Studios, and Epic Games.
When announcing the new Giant Skull studio, Asmussen explained that the team prioritizes creativity and a thirst for discovery. They’ve brought together a skilled group known for creating captivating stories, exciting battles, and thrilling movement, all with the ambition of building a detailed world players will enjoy exploring for a long time.
Not much was known about the Dungeons & Dragons project underway at Giant Skull. One thing was certain: it wouldn’t be a new Baldur’s Gate game. While Wizards of the Coast president John Hight mentioned they might explore a new Baldur’s Gate in the future, Asmussen’s team was focused on a completely different project.
Hight described Baldur’s Gate as a fantastic game and confirmed they plan to make a follow-up eventually. However, this new project isn’t a direct sequel. Instead, they’re working with Stig and his team to create a compelling story and introduce the world of Dungeons & Dragons to a wider audience. The goal is to appeal to both dedicated D&D players, allowing them to experience their fantasies, and fans of action games like Star Wars Jedi and God of War.
As Stig pointed out, Dungeons & Dragons is a game for absolutely everyone, a real creative playground. Hundreds of millions of people already know about or have played D&D, and we’re committed to keeping it popular for another 50 years.
Asmussen also mentioned the game would have improved animations compared to titles like Star Wars Jedi: Survivor.
