In the same vein as other games within the Dying Light series, Dying Light: The Beast promises a vast, open environment ripe for player exploration. As Tymon Smektala, the franchise director, pointed out in an interview with GamesRadar, what truly makes an open-world game captivating isn’t just its size; it’s about the thrill of delving into and discovering this world.
As a gamer, I’d put it this way: “It’s not just about the size of open worlds; it’s all about the immersion. A smaller, meticulously crafted world might not boast grandiose scales, but if it feels authentic and truly alive, that sense of presence in the game will be far more rewarding.
In a shift from typical open-world game structures, which often feature activity hubs with little interaction in between, Dying Light: The Beast developed by Techland aims to keep players engaged and active. As Smektala puts it, the goal was to create an open-world experience where players are consistently playing, controlling, and interacting with the game at all times.
He mentioned that ‘Dying Light‘ is likely one of the most packed open-world games available, and further explained that the developers aim to create a world that keeps players continuously alert, always engaged, and consistently immersed in the experience.
Reflecting on our previous conversations, I recall Smektala mentioning that our studio perceived itself as an underdog and, in the process of creating Dying Light 2: Stay Human, we seemingly lost some essence of the original Dying Light franchise. Despite its commercial triumph, there were moments where we may have stumbled along the way.
According to Smektala, fans were expressing that they felt something was missing, stating “that’s not it, that’s not what made you unique.” This feedback prompted the studio to strive for a more refined AAA experience with Dying Light 2 Stay Human. However, he emphasized that the ultimate goal is now to offer players a blend of both elements – the polish expected from an AAA game along with the essence of the original Dying Light.
He stated, “We aim to achieve two things. Firstly, we strive for AAA-level quality in our delivery. Secondly, we want to demonstrate that our creativity and unique touch – our ‘mojo’ – is still intact. We understand what sets Dying Light apart, and if players express admiration for its resemblance to the original game, finding it polished and impressive, then I believe we will be extremely satisfied.
Last week, we were treated to a new trailer for “Dying Light: The Beast,” which showcased the main game setting, the once bustling tourist town of Castor Woods. Now decimated by the zombie outbreak, players will also be able to traverse the town itself and its surrounding areas, such as the verdant forest within a nearby national park.
Dying Light: The Beast is coming to PC, PS4, PS5, Xbox One and Xbox Series X/S on August 22.
