The first authorized review of the movie ‘Superman’ is out, and unfortunately, it doesn’t bode well for Warner Bros. Discovery or The Daily Beast.
On July 8th, the review embargo for Superman officially lifts, but Warner Bros. has been carefully managing early critic reviews for James Gunn’s eagerly awaited DC reboot. However, this strategy encountered a significant issue last night when The Daily Beast inadvertently released its review prematurely—and it wasn’t exactly flattering.

Even though the review was swiftly removed, it remained visible for a brief period, causing a stir on social media. Rapidly circulating screenshots and summaries ignited like wildfire, and the initial response is already raising questions about the future trajectory of DC’s reimagined cinematic universe.
So what did this first published review have to say about Superman?
This new ‘Superman’ movie is a devastating blow to the superhero film genre.

As reported by The Daily Beast, Superman appears as if it’s a “Saturday morning cartoon” filled with excessive CGI effects and chaotic action scenes. This overwhelming abundance of loud and intense action sequences, as stated by The Daily Beast, can diminish their impact. Instead of enhancing the emotional depth, it seems to create a sensory overload that overshadows the film’s core emotions.
David Corenswet, who’s taking over the role of Clark Kent, isn’t immune to criticism. Although his physical appearance is praised, critics argue that he seems less impactful compared to Christopher Reeve and Henry Cavill. This perception is reinforced by a storyline that appears disjointed, adding to the challenge for viewers as they navigate through its chaotic structure, which swiftly changes between various exotic locations and events.

The review criticizes the movie’s script for pretending to care about genuine emotions and finds the humor unfunny. The connection between Clark and Lois Lane is described as dull, while Nicholas Hoult’s portrayal of Lex Luthor is overshadowed by a confusing plot that makes the entire production seem shallow and ridiculous.
What’s particularly concerning for DC fans is the similarity to Joss Whedon’s Justice League, a film often regarded as one of the DCEU’s weakest entries. The critic points out that Superman is bogged down by an excess of “characters, both heroes and villains, that it fails to adequately develop,” resulting in a storyline that feels flat despite Gunn’s distinctive “vivid and dynamic” visual approach.
To say the response was brutal would be an understatement.

Although this is only one early review, it significantly dims expectations for the upcoming premiere. With initial box office predictions becoming less optimistic, negative word-of-mouth might lead to a catastrophic decline in week two, despite a promising start at the box office.
There’s a good possibility that the bulk of reviews coming up next week will be more lenient or even positive. However, let me clarify: this first review for the new Superman is not the type of early hype Warner Bros. was hoping for. It rekindles doubts about Gunn’s approach to DC, questioning if it might be too specific, disorderly, or self-referential for mainstream viewers to connect with.
Whether this leaked critique is a fluke or the canary in the coal mine remains to be seen.

Superman flies into theaters on July 11, 2025.
