EastEnders’ Grant Mitchell, played by Ross Kemp, is facing a heartbreaking dilemma. He must decide whether to support his brother Phil (Steve McFadden) or be with his dying friend, Nigel Bates (Paul Bradley), in his last moments.
After yesterday’s dramatic events – where Phil both evicted his family and fell apart emotionally – he avoided visiting Nigel at the care home. He felt Nigel had broken his commitment to support Phil through thick and thin.
He felt Nigel, Julie (Karen Henthorn), and the Mitchells didn’t rely on him, but that wasn’t true at all.
With time slipping away after Nige fell and was hospitalized, Julie made the heartbreaking decision to stop his treatment and focus on keeping him comfortable. Grant visited the care home while she shared this difficult news, and he worried that Phil wouldn’t have a chance to say goodbye.
Billy Mitchell attempted to connect with his cousin, but Phil was too consumed by his sadness to respond, and Billy was ultimately rejected.

Just as Grant was leaving, Nigel jumped out of bed, urgently asking for “one last stone.” He didn’t immediately understand why, but quickly recalled a particularly good skipping stone his father had given him years ago.
I remember he used to keep it in the bathroom, right by the tub, and I was really hoping he’d thought to bring it with him to Walford. But Phil told me it was gone for good – totally lost – and that there was no way they’d ever find another one like it. It was a real shame.

Grant rushed to find a substitute from Square Gardens, but the one he showed Nigel slipped from his grasp, suggesting it wasn’t the right item. Unbeknownst to Grant, Phil had secretly dedicated himself to locating an exact copy of the valuable object.
Billy and Mark Fowler tried again to talk to Phil, but he was nowhere around. Grant had a thought and immediately drove to the beach, hoping to find him.
When he arrived, he saw his brother skipping stones by the ocean. But before he could go over to him, Julie called with terrible news: Nigel’s condition had suddenly worsened. His breathing was failing, and it didn’t seem he had much time left.
Will Grant stay at the beach, or head to the care home to say goodbye to Nigel?
