A long-running chapter has closed on EastEnders as Julie Bates, played by Karen Henthorn, has departed the show to embark on a journey through India.
Last year in July, actress Henthorn returned to her role after a 27-year break. She had previously made a short vocal appearance in January.
Julie was looking for her husband, Nigel, who had recently moved to Walford after being diagnosed with early-onset dementia. He didn’t want to worry her, so he made a private arrangement with his friend, Phil Mitchell, to live with him and eventually provide care for Phil when he needed it.
She was initially cold and unwelcoming to Phil, upset that he hadn’t told her about Nigel’s illness. However, she became more understanding when she found out Phil had only kept it quiet because her husband asked him to.
Since moving to Walford and starting work at the local high school, Julie has become a valued and reliable member of the community. She unexpectedly found herself involved in the storyline surrounding Joel Marshall (Max Murray) and his connection to the ‘Manosphere’.

Julie had a very difficult week, mourning the loss of Nigel at his funeral. Both her son, Josh Saunders (played by Jon Lee), and stepdaughter Clare (Gemma Bissix) came back for the service, which was briefly disrupted when the hearse unexpectedly drove a different route.
Billy Mitchell was driving when he and Nige headed to a warehouse where Mark Fowler was being held captive. Soon after, Phil, along with his siblings Sam and Grant, arrived and demanded Mark be released.
Once everyone had arrived at the church, the community came together to hear a heartfelt tribute to Julie. Afterward, she shared with Phil that she planned to move back to Scotland, where she and Nigel had spent much of their lives.
Phil assured her that she would always have a home with the Mitchells, and didn’t have to go.
Today, she finally worked up the courage to read a letter Nigel wrote before he became ill. In it, he revealed he’d left her his pension, which meant she’d now be able to afford the trip to India they’d always dreamed of.
It really got to me when Julie started crying and offered to share some of the money with Phil, wanting to thank him for everything. But he was too proud to accept, which honestly, made the moment even more touching.

Phil was surprised to hear about the holiday, but they both went to The Vic to celebrate. However, the celebration didn’t last long, as she left quietly.
When Phil realised that she was missing, he raced over to No. 55 and found a goodbye note:
“Thank you for everything,” it read.
He rushed to the subway station and caught her just before her train left. She thanked him for all his help with Nigel and for everything he’d done for her, explaining she didn’t want a dramatic goodbye and couldn’t bring herself to make a big scene.
The two exchanged a final hug before she headed off for India… will we ever see Julie again?

As a total soap fan, I follow Michael Adams’ work at TopMob religiously. He’s their Soaps Editor, and honestly, he knows everything that’s happening in all the big shows – from the drama in Weatherfield (that’s Coronation Street, for those who don’t know!) to Walford, Emmerdale, and even Hollyoaks. Before TopMob, he was a Soaps Reporter at Metro for a couple of years, and get this – he actually worked on the sets of both Coronation Street and Emmerdale! So he’s got insider knowledge, which makes his spoilers and gossip super reliable.
