El Tigre Creator Talks Dark Series Revival

Despite only lasting one season, Nickelodeon’s El Tigre has remained popular with fans. The show, created by animator Jorge Gutierrez – known for his work on Book of Life and The Simpsons – first aired in 2007. Recently, at the MomoCon anime convention, Gutierrez announced he’s working to bring the series back, and is currently in talks with Paramount to make it happen. He even shared some details about the potential plot, hinting it could be much more serious than the original.

At MomoCon this weekend, Jorge Gutierrez shared that he’s juggling several projects – new shows for Disney, a film for Netflix, and a Speedy Gonzalez movie with Warner Bros. – but he’s still considering a revival of his Nickelodeon series, El Tigre. According to Gutierrez, the idea is to bring back a twenty-year-old Manny Rivera to the present day, where he reconnects with old characters. In this potential revival, future Manny warns Frida that she must defeat El Tigre’s father and grandfather to save the world. While the revival isn’t definite, Gutierrez is actively exploring the possibility, which is encouraging news for fans of El Tigre.

How The El Tigre Revival Might Happen

It’s funny how things worked out, but a revival of El Tigre actually started with a video game! Jorge Gutierrez, the show’s creator, revealed at Momocon that discussions about bringing the show back began because of Nickelodeon All-Star Brawl 2. Surprisingly, El Tigre wasn’t originally planned to be in the game. Jorge saw a fan-made image of his character battling another, thought it was official, and shared it online. Nickelodeon noticed the huge positive reaction and decided to add El Tigre to the game, sparking renewed interest in the character after many years.

If you haven’t seen El Tigre, all episodes are now streaming on Paramount+. The show centers around Manny, who learns his father is a superhero while his grandfather is a notorious supervillain. This puts Manny in a difficult position, forcing him to decide whether to follow the path of good or evil. Interestingly, the show’s creator, Jorge Gutierrez, hopes this series can lead to revivals of other classic Nickelodeon cartoons. At MomoCon, Gutierrez announced his desire to include characters from My Life as a Teenage Robot and Invader Zim in future crossovers, and he’s confirmed that both original creators have given him their blessing, showing how committed he is to the idea.
