Elon Musk’s Daughter Vivian Wilson Says She’s Financially Independent

Vivian Wilson is paving her own path.

Elon Musk’s daughter recently clarified that she doesn’t receive any of her father’s immense $480 billion fortune, addressing common assumptions about his wealth.

During a panel at the 2025 Teen Vogue Summit on September 20th, Vivian shared that she is financially independent and currently earning money.

She added, “People have a lot of assumptions, and you just kinda have to deal with that.”

This isn’t the first time the 21-year-old has publicly distanced herself from her father’s opinions and actions, and she’s made it clear she doesn’t profit from their relationship.

In a recent interview with The Cut, she explained that she doesn’t have a family inheritance and that assumptions about her wealth are incorrect. She clarified she doesn’t have access to a large sum of money – hundreds of thousands of dollars – to spend.

Vivian, the daughter of Elon Musk’s ex-wife Justine Wilson, said that despite her father’s immense wealth, she never wanted to follow in his footsteps.

She added that she wasn’t striving to be extremely wealthy. She explained she could cover her basic needs, had good friends, a place to live, and a little extra money – which she felt lucky to have, especially considering how things are for people her age in Los Angeles.

In addition to becoming financially independent from her father, Vivian described the Tesla CEO – who has thirteen children total – as emotionally distant and self-absorbed. She also criticized him for publicly advocating for traditional family values.

In a Threads post last August, Vivian responded to her father’s praise of his younger sons by saying she wouldn’t let him present himself as a ‘caring father’ without speaking up. She bluntly called his attempt ‘absolutely pathetic’.

And she is not buying into her father’s alleged rebrand.

She told him she didn’t understand his new attempt to present himself as a traditional, Christian family man, calling it a strange approach. She pointed out he’s repeatedly been unfaithful and dishonest, even about his children, and that, to her knowledge, he’s never practiced Christianity or been involved with a church.

Maye was born in Saskatchewan, Canada and moved to Pretoria, South Africa with her parents in 1950 when she was seven years old. She separated from Elon Musk’s father, Errol Musk, in 1979.

Oh my gosh, you won’t BELIEVE this about Maye! So, after Elon’s family moved to Canada when he was just 17, she automatically became a Canadian citizen – how amazing is that? But she didn’t stop there! She built this incredible career for herself, opening her own dietician practice, and then she became PRESIDENT of the Consulting Dieticians of Canada! Can you even imagine? And get this – she *also* did modeling! She’s seriously a total superstar, I’m obsessed!

After selling his company Zip2 for over $300 million in 2019, Elon Musk bought an apartment in New York City for his mother. She lived there for 13 years and continued her modeling work, even signing with the IMG Models agency.

In an essay for CNBC, Maye explained that she raised her children with the same values her parents instilled in her: independence, kindness, honesty, thoughtfulness, and good manners. She also emphasized the importance of hard work and doing what’s right.

Elon’s father is an engineer and like Elon, was born in South Africa.

Errol Musk mentioned in a 2015 Forbes interview that he frequently traveled abroad with his children-explaining that he raised them after their parents separated. However, his relationship with his son, Elon, isn’t always smooth.

In a candid 2017 interview with *Rolling Stone*, Elon Musk spoke about his difficult childhood and his relationship with his father. He explained that after his parents divorced, living with his father turned out to be a mistake.

However, Errol told Rolling Stone, “I love my children and would readily do whatever for them.”

After my divorce from Maye, I married Heide, who had a sweet little 4-year-old daughter named Jana Bezuidenhout. Heide and I went on to have two daughters of our own, but eventually, our paths diverged as well.

After experiencing her own heartbreak, Jana contacted Errol. As Errol described in a 2018 interview with *The Sunday Times*, they both felt lost and alone at the time, and a connection developed naturally. He suggested it was simply fate bringing them together.

The couple fell in love and had a son, Elliott, in 2017, followed by a daughter in 2019. Errol explained to *The Sun* that he believes the purpose of life is to have children, stating he’d happily have more if he could, seeing no reason not to.

Born in 1972, Kimbal is a restaurant owner and the creator of The Kitchen, a group of five restaurants committed to using ingredients directly from nearby farms. He also leads Big-Green, a non-profit organization that has established 200 educational gardens in schools throughout the United States.

Oh my gosh, Tosca is just incredible! She’s a filmmaker, and she’s the genius behind Passionflix, which she started in 2017. It’s this amazing streaming service totally dedicated to romance – can you believe it? She *gets* us romance readers, and she’s taking on that huge, billion-dollar romance novel world! I’m seriously obsessed with everything she does.

Elon Musk married Justine Wilson, his college sweetheart from Queen’s University in Canada, in 2000. In a 2010 article for *Marie Claire* titled “I Was a Starter Wife: Inside America’s Messiest Divorce,” Justine recalled that Elon told her, “I am the alpha in this marriage” while they were dancing at their wedding reception.

At the time, I didn’t think much of it,” Justine explained, “much like I didn’t pay attention when he asked me to sign the postnuptial agreement. But eventually, I realized he was being genuine and meant what he said.

In 2002, Justine and her partner experienced the heartbreaking loss of their 10-week-old son, Nevada Alexander, to Sudden Infant Death Syndrome (SIDS). As Justine described, Nevada was put down for a nap on his back, as they always did, and tragically stopped breathing.

After undergoing IVF, the couple had five more children: twins Vivian and Griffin, and triplets Kai, Saxon, and Damian.

In 2008, Elon filed for divorce.

In 2022, Elon Musk shared that he brought his children, Griffin and the triplets, to meet Pope Francis. Though honored by the meeting with the head of the Catholic Church, Elon jokingly described his outfit as a “tragic” suit.

In 2022, Griffin’s twin sister legally petitioned to change her name to reflect her gender identity. As part of this process, she stated she wanted to completely sever ties with her biological father.

In July 2024, Elon Musk publicly discussed his daughter’s gender transition. During an interview with Jordan Peterson on the Daily Wire, he stated he felt like he had “lost his son,” and described his child – whom he still referred to by her birth name – as having been affected by what he called the “woke mind virus.” He implied this meant she was, in a sense, lost to him.

He claimed he was misled into signing medical paperwork that allowed Vivian to receive gender-affirming care.

Honestly, I was *shocked* when I heard what he said! Vivian immediately came to his defense on NBC News, and she was SO right. She basically said he wasn’t fooled at all – he totally knew what he was signing up for, all the possible side effects and everything. It’s infuriating that anyone would suggest he didn’t!

Oh my god, you guys, I was reading this *Teen Vogue* interview from 2025 with Vivian, and it was EVERYTHING. She basically said she moved all the way from L.A. to Japan! Can you believe it? And get this – she hasn’t spoken to her dad since 2020. When asked about him, she just… unleashed! She called him a ‘pathetic man-child,’ which, honestly, YES QUEEN. She was so fierce, saying she isn’t scared of him just because he has money. She literally said she doesn’t care how rich someone is! I’m obsessed with how unapologetic she is. It was such a powerful moment, I’ve read it like five times already!

Elon and Talulah, both known for their roles on the HBO series *Westworld*, got married in 2010. Talulah later told CBS News that things moved quickly; they became engaged after only about two weeks of dating.

The couple first divorced in 2012, then surprisingly remarried in 2013, only to divorce again in 2016. More recently, in June 2024, Talulah married Thomas Brodie-Sangster, known for his role in *Love Actually*.

Elon Musk and Amber Heard began dating publicly in early 2017. This followed Amber’s divorce from Johnny Depp and Elon’s second divorce from Talulah Riley. However, their relationship was short-lived.

In a November 2017 interview with *Rolling Stone*, Elon Musk revealed he had recently gone through a breakup. He admitted he was deeply in love and that the split was very painful, adding that his girlfriend had initiated the breakup more than he had.

Elon Musk and singer Grimes had an on-and-off relationship for four years, beginning in 2018. In September 2021, Musk told Page Six they were essentially separated due to his work commitments at SpaceX and Tesla, which kept him mostly in Texas or abroad, while Grimes’ work was based in Los Angeles. At the time, he said Grimes was staying with him, and their son, nicknamed Baby X, was nearby.

In March 2022, she told *Vanity Fair* that they live in separate homes but remain close as best friends.

She later shared on Twitter that she and E had broken up *again* as of the time of the article, but they remain best friends and the love of her life. She added that her life and art will always be focused on ‘The Mission’.

In September 2023, the singer known as “Crystal Ball” announced that they and their partner have three children. Their youngest, Techno Mechanicus, joins older siblings X Æ A-12 and Exa Dark Sideræl.

In November 2024, Grimes shared that she had been involved in a year-long legal struggle in a state with unfavorable laws regarding parental rights. She stated that her Instagram posts and modeling work were used against her in a custody dispute, all while she was experiencing a painful separation from the person she loved, who she felt was changing into someone she didn’t recognize.

It absolutely broke my heart hearing about this! She was basically battling with one hand tied behind her back – he has SO much more money and power, and still managed to keep her from seeing one of her children for five whole months! And honestly, what she *could* say publicly was the worst part. She hinted at so much more happening behind the scenes, things she needs to keep private for now, after years of dealing with this… it’s just awful. I can’t even imagine.

In 2020, Elon Musk and Grimes had a son. They originally chose a unique name, but had to simplify the spelling to comply with California law, which only allows English letters. They ultimately named him X Æ A-Xii.

Grimes shared the meaning behind her child’s unique name on social media. ‘X’ represents the unknown variable, while ‘Æ’ is her elven-inspired way of spelling ‘Ai,’ which stands for love and/or artificial intelligence. ‘A-12’ is a reference to the SR-17 aircraft – her favorite – and symbolizes speed. She emphasized that the concept is about power without aggression, being fast and effective in any situation, but ultimately non-violent.

Grimes continued, “A=Archangel, my favorite song” adding a rat and sword emoji. “Metal rat.”

Grimes shared in a 2022 interview with Vanity Fair that she and Elon Musk secretly had a daughter through surrogacy.

The name ‘Exa’ comes from exaFLOPS, a term used in supercomputing that refers to the power to perform a quintillion calculations per second, she explained. ‘Dark,’ on the other hand, represents the unknown – something people often fear, but which is simply the lack of light. Dark matter, she added, is one of the most fascinating mysteries in the universe.

Sideræl (pronounced sigh-deer-ee-el) is what my mom calls the universe’s real time – based on stars and deep space, rather than our everyday Earth time. It’s also a reference to Galadriel, a character from Lord of the Rings, who chooses to give up the powerful ring.

Walter Isaacson revealed in his biography Elon Musk that Exa was born in December 2021 via surrogate.

The book reveals that around Father’s Day in 2022, the couple, who had an on-and-off relationship, had a son named Techno Mechanicus, but they call him Tau. The baby was born through surrogacy, and the book features a June 2022 photo of Elon feeding him.

Grimes has repeatedly asked for her children’s privacy, even trying legal options, but hasn’t been successful. In a 2025 social media post, she expressed deep concern about the public attention her children receive, saying she worries about it constantly and feels helpless to change the situation.

In 2022, court records revealed that Elon Musk had twins with Shivon Zilis, an executive at his company Neuralink. The twins were born in Austin, Texas, where Elon lives, in November 2021.

He also commented on the report via X, stating he’s “doing his best to help the underpopulation crisis” and that a declining birth rate poses the greatest threat to civilization.

“Mark my words,” he added, “they are sadly true.”

The 2023 biography of Elon Musk revealed the full names of his twins: Strider Sekhar Sirius and Azure Astra Alice.

Elon Musk and Shivon Zilis had their third child together on February 28, 2024. Musk confirmed the birth in June, telling Page Six that while they didn’t announce it with a press release, it wasn’t a secret from those close to them.

A year after opening, Shivon wrote on Twitter, “Happy birthday, Arcadia! I love you so much!”

The classic poem goes, “Roses are red, violets are blue,” and on Valentine’s Day 2025, conservative personality Ashley St. Clair had some news to share.

Author Shivon Zilis announced on February 14th via X (formerly Twitter) that she and Elon Musk welcomed a son, Romulus, five months ago. She named him after Romulus, the legendary founder of Rome. Zilis explained she had kept the birth private to protect her child, but felt compelled to share the news because the media planned to reveal it anyway, potentially causing harm.

She explained that she wants her child to have a normal and secure upbringing. Therefore, she requested that the media respect their child’s privacy and avoid intrusive coverage.

Following reports that her representative asked Elon Musk to publicly recognize his fatherhood, she claimed he reduced the financial support he provides for their child. This led Musk to respond publicly on social media.

He posted on X on March 31st that he’s unsure if he’s the father of the child, but he’s open to finding out. He also stated that he’s already given Ashley $2.5 million and continues to send her $500,000 each year.

She could have gotten even more money, according to an April article in the *Wall Street Journal*. It claimed that Elon Musk’s employee, Jared Birchall, offered Ashley $15 million plus $100,000 each month for child support if she didn’t talk about their child.

However, Ashley said she told him, “I don’t want my son to feel like he’s a secret.”

On February 28, 2025, Elon and Shivon announced the birth of their fourth child, a son named Seldon Lycurgus. They decided to share the news while celebrating their third child’s first birthday.

I spoke with Elon, and because of Arcadia’s birthday, we decided to share news about our amazing son, Seldon Lycurgus. He’s strong and kindhearted, and we love him very much, I shared on X.

Elon responded with a heart emoji.
