Embracer Group Will “Actively” Explore External Partnerships for Deus Ex, Legacy of Kain, Thief and More

As a big fan, I was really interested to read the letter from Embracer Group‘s Lars Wingefors after they announced the creation of Fellowship Entertainment. He explained a lot about why they’re splitting off the game development side of things. But the coolest part for me was learning they’re thinking about letting other studios work on some of their older game franchises – basically, licensing out IPs we all love! It sounds like they want to breathe new life into those games, and I’m excited to see what happens.

This includes popular game franchises like Saints Row, Legacy of Kain, Deus Ex, Red Faction, The Mask, Thief, and TimeSplitters, and more. This strategy extends beyond just partnering with other game developers. Wingefors also highlighted that Dark Horse will contribute through a new division focused on intellectual property and licensing, leveraging their experience creating adaptations for television and film.

We plan to further develop our biggest franchises, including The Lord of the Rings/Middle-earth and Tomb Raider. We also intend to invest in and collaborate on new projects for other major titles like Kingdom Come: Deliverance, Dead Island, Darksiders, Remnant, and the Metro series. Beyond these, we’ll be actively seeking partnerships to explore opportunities for our other popular games, including Saints Row, Legacy of Kain, Deus Ex, Red Faction, The Mask, Thief, and TimeSplitters, among many others. Finally, Dark Horse will now operate as part of a new division focused on intellectual property and licensing, leveraging its experience in co-producing films and TV shows with Hollywood partners.

Wingefors also pointed out that several of the game franchises now part of Fellowship Entertainment haven’t received the attention they deserve, and are likely worth more than people realize. Creating Fellowship Entertainment as a separate company is intended to give these franchises the focus they need to thrive. He believes Fellowship Entertainment has the potential to become one of the most profitable companies in the industry and grow at a faster rate than its competitors.

It’s unclear if we’ll see a new game in the Deus Ex or Red Faction series, or even a fresh Saints Row open-world title. However, the fact that Fellowship Entertainment now owns these game franchises is potentially exciting news for longtime fans.

When announcing the new, separate company, Wingefors explained that dividing the game development and management teams would allow each to operate more effectively and take clear ownership of their goals.

I’m very optimistic about Fellowship Entertainment’s future growth, and I also see significant potential for a more streamlined Embracer Group through its existing projects and strategic acquisitions. As Chairman and a major investor, I’m fully dedicated to supporting the work needed to build long-term value for both companies.

Okay, so Embracer and Fellowship Entertainment are splitting up, but it’s not going to happen overnight. They’re saying it should all be finalized before 2027 is over, which feels like a long ways off, honestly. As a gamer, I’m just hoping this doesn’t mess up any of the games I’m looking forward to!
