Bruce Willis and Emma Heming Willis’ children are grappling with their new reality.
It’s been nearly three years since actor Bruce Willis received a diagnosis of frontotemporal dementia (FTD), and his daughter Emma recently shared how his daughters, Mabel, 13, and Evelyn, 11, are coping with his condition.
She told *Vogue Australia* in an interview on October 10th that the children are coping well under the circumstances. However, she acknowledged it’s been difficult, as they are grieving and deeply miss their father, especially during important moments in their lives. It’s hard on them that he can’t be there.
She acknowledged that children are often able to recover from difficult experiences, but admitted she used to dislike hearing that phrase because others didn’t grasp the extent of their struggles. While she’s unsure if her own children will fully recover, she finds comfort in the fact that they – and she herself – are learning and growing through the process.
Emma, 47, also talked about how life has changed since Bruce—who shares daughters Rumer, 37, Scout, 34, and Tallulah, 31, with his ex-wife Demi Moore—received a diagnosis of frontotemporal dementia (FTD) at age 67 in 2023. He was previously diagnosed with aphasia.
The former model explained that she’s learned to live with her grief. It’s a constant presence, and while she can’t get rid of it, she’s choosing to allow herself to feel all her emotions – sadness and everything else – without letting grief completely define her life.
She explained that her sadness comes from how much she loves Bruce and her family, and she finds comfort in that love. She believes everyone experiences grief at some point, because it’s a natural part of life and loving others.
Emma, having coped with her grief by writing a book for caregivers titled *The Unexpected Journey*, also talked about an idea that’s been helpful to her family throughout their experience.
My stepdaughter, Scout, wrote in her book that ‘Grief is the price we pay for loving someone deeply,’ and I think that’s absolutely true.
Emma explained that Evelyn and Mabel are coping with their father’s absence by writing down cherished words and memories of their time together in a special notebook.
“You think you’ll never forget these things,” she reflected, “but then you do.”
Emma says her husband, whom she’s been with for over 15 years, is doing well – he’s still cheerful and has the same sparkle in his eyes.
She stressed that even amidst difficulties, beautiful moments still happen. She wants people to remember that joy and laughter are still present in their lives, especially when shared with Bruce.

Being his firstborn, I sometimes wish I could be a tiny baby again, just to snuggle up on his chest and laugh with him. He’s the best.

As a mom, there are few things more rewarding than watching your kids shine, and I was bursting with pride recently remembering back to 2018! My daughters, Mabel and Evelyn, absolutely killed it in their first play – a super cute, small-scale production of *Annie*. Mabel played Molly, and Evelyn was Sandy, and honestly, the entire cast and crew were fantastic. It was a truly special experience, and my husband and I couldn’t have been prouder of their hard work and dedication!
