Emmerdale favourite teases Moira and Cain Dingle’s future after prison release – and sadness at end of Barton era

Natalie J Robb, who plays Moira Dingle, recently shared with TopMob that Moira’s future is uncertain now that she’s out of prison.

A popular character on Emmerdale was accused of human trafficking and murder, but was found not guilty in today’s episode.

Honestly, as a soap fan, it was pretty shocking to watch Joe Tate manipulate Robert Sugden. Joe basically forced Robert to plant fake passports – belonging to the people Celia Daniels and Ray Walters were exploiting – right in Celia’s living room. It was all part of Joe’s scheme to take over her farm, Butler’s Farm, and it was a really tense, unsettling scene.

Moira refused to give up her part of the business, but learning that her husband, Cain, had been diagnosed with prostate cancer made her see that the struggling company was adding to his stress.

Joe put Robert in charge of the farm, and he renamed it ‘Emmerdale Farm’ to honor the Sugden family’s history in farming.

Cain had to start his own business at Wishing Well Cottage, and it’s likely to cause problems with Moira soon.

“There’ll be bumps along the way and she might not like her surroundings,” Robb teased.

I was really saddened to hear that Butler’s Farm was closing. It had been a part of my life for seventeen years, and losing it felt like losing a part of myself.

I’d heard whispers about it, and then I confirmed it was true. I was sad, of course, but I realized all good things eventually finish. I tried to see it that way, because you naturally become a little connected to things.

Robb became part of the show in 2009, and around that time, Moira and her initial husband, John Barton (played by James Thornton), moved into Butler’s with their three children. The location has been featured in many of the actress’s scenes, including the heartbreaking moment when her daughter, Holly (Sophie Powles), passed away.

“That’s where my [Moira’s] family were,” Robb continued, “That’s where it all started for me.”

Honestly, one of the best parts of this production is the set itself. It’s just a really great space to work in. The way it’s laid out gives the cameras plenty of room to move, and even with a large crew, it never feels cramped – there’s always enough space for everyone.

I’ve been involved from the very beginning, and I find the situation a little strange. However, it also opens up possibilities for new developments and stories to emerge.

Holly was buried on Butler’s property, and to make things even worse, Cain learned that Joe had ordered her memorial to be destroyed.

Moira was devastated to find the tree near her grave had been cut down, but she felt a little better knowing Cain was there for her. They’re trying to appear strong and determined, and won’t let the Tate family see how upset they are.

Robb described their complicated connection as a typical relationship where they vent their frustrations at each other, but emphasized that, at its core, it’s a love story.

They can’t bear the thought of being apart. Their connection has grown much stronger over time.

But how will Moira settle in with the wider Dingle clan?

“She definitely sees herself as a Dingle, without a doubt,” she explained.

Family is incredibly important to Moira, and always has been. The Dingles are a very family-oriented bunch too. Initially, I think Moira might struggle to adjust to their close-knit ways, but she’ll eventually become one of them – she’ll become ‘Dingle-fied,’ as I like to say.

Emmerdale airs weeknights at 8pm on ITV1 and from 7am on ITVX.
