Euphoria‘s days are numbered as the show’s creator and its star Zendaya reveal its fate.
HBO’s hit show Euphoria, a teen drama with dark themes, quickly became a phenomenon. It was the network’s second most popular series since 2004, surpassed only by Game of Thrones. The show has earned an impressive 25 Emmy nominations and won nine awards, with Zendaya receiving multiple Emmys for her performance.
Sam Levinson, the creator of Euphoria, recently told The New York Times about the show’s future. While fans have eagerly awaited season three for four years, and many are already sad about the show ending, Zendaya confirmed on The Drew Barrymore Show that “closure is coming,” meaning season three will be the last. Levinson reinforced this in his interview, indicating there are no plans for additional seasons.
I approach each season as if it’s my last, meaning if I have a compelling idea, I’ll pitch it to HBO. If it feels right, we’ll explore it. Creating the show is a huge undertaking, with every team – from costumes to editing and cinematography – pouring their heart into it. Our main focus is always making the current season the best it can be. So, if this turns out to be the final one, that’s wonderful. But we’re open to continuing if the opportunity arises.
When asked about the status of the show, Levinson responded that he simply wanted to spend time with his family, reading and watching movies. This suggests that the third season of Euphoria will be the last, and there are no current plans for a fourth season.
Season 3 experienced significant behind-the-scenes turmoil, including the departure of its composer, Labrinth, who had been heavily involved in the first two seasons. He publicly expressed his frustration on Instagram, initially using a strong expletive directed at the show, and has since reaffirmed those feelings in a subsequent post.
It’s common for people in this business to be dishonest, even while claiming to be honest. That’s why I decided to pull my music from it. I’ve spoken with HBO and, as far as I understand, we’re on good terms. Ultimately, I left because when I work for someone, I prioritize their vision, but I won’t tolerate being mistreated.
The news follows an announcement that Hans Zimmer will exclusively compose music for what is expected to be the show’s last season. This is a shift from previous seasons, which were highly praised for their soundtracks created entirely by Labrinth. While the reasons for this change aren’t public, Labrinth has hinted at a creative disagreement with the show’s creator, Levinson.
Euphoria season 4 will be available to stream on HBO Max on April 12.
