Every Game of Thrones Tie-In & Spinoff George RR Martin’s Been Involved With While Writing Winds of Winter

Following the massive popularity of Game of Thrones, it was expected that HBO would create additional shows and projects set in that world. The original series, based on George R.R. Martin’s A Song of Ice & Fire novels, was a huge hit because of its fantastic storytelling and incredibly detailed world. As the show gained viewers, fans quickly expressed interest in exploring more of Essos and Westeros, leading to the development of Game of Thrones spin-offs during the show’s run.

As a longtime viewer, it became clear that the Game of Thrones show actually moved past the story George R.R. Martin had already published in his books. We’ve all been eagerly awaiting The Winds of Winter – book six – since 2010, but it just hasn’t come out yet, and the delays have been frustrating. It’s interesting to note that while he’s been working on it, Martin has also been busy with other Game of Thrones related projects. He’s been heavily involved in spin-offs like House of the Dragon and A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms, plus a bunch of other things set in that same universe. It makes you wonder where his priorities lie these days!

7) Rumored Arya Stark Sequel

As a big fan of Game of Thrones, I’ve always felt Arya Stark deserved her own show, and it sounds like that might actually happen! At first, everyone thought the spin-off would be about Jon Snow, but now the buzz is all about Arya and what she’s been up to in Essos after the main series ended. We don’t know much for sure yet, but apparently George R.R. Martin is helping to shape the story, which is really exciting!

6) The Golden Empire

One of the most mysterious upcoming projects connected to Game of Thrones is The Golden Empire, an animated series first revealed in 2022 by George R.R. Martin on his blog. The show is set in Yi Ti, a land previously unexplored in the Game of Thrones world. Since the initial announcement, little news has emerged about the series’ development. Fans are excited about The Golden Empire because Yi Ti has been mentioned in the books, and it represents another spin-off project Martin is developing alongside his long-awaited novel, The Winds of Winter.

5) Nine Voyages

Besides House of the Dragon, HBO originally planned another Game of Thrones prequel called Nine Voyages (formerly The Sea Snake). This series would focus on the younger years of Corlys Velaryon, a popular character from House of the Dragon. His adventurous past provides plenty of material for compelling stories, which is why an animated series based on his life was considered. George R.R. Martin first mentioned his involvement in March 2022, and it’s currently still being developed.

4) Aegon’s Conquest

The story of Aegon I, the man who united the Seven Kingdoms and is known as Aegon the Conqueror, is a major part of the Game of Thrones history that hasn’t been fully told. He’s a fascinating figure, and a project focusing on his rise to power – potentially titled Aegon’s Conquest – has been discussed as either a movie or a spin-off series. It’s one of several projects George R.R. Martin has been involved with recently, and it’s still unclear what form it will ultimately take.

3) Ten Thousand Ships

The story of Princess Nymeria, a legendary warrior from the world of Game of Thrones, is another potential prequel that has faced difficulties getting off the ground. A project called Ten Thousand Ships was initially announced in 2021, though it was reportedly pitched as early as 2017. George R.R. Martin revealed his involvement in 2022, but since then, the project has been cancelled, reworked, and potentially revived. As of 2024, Ten Thousand Ships remains one of many projects Martin is juggling alongside his work on The Winds of Winter.

2) House of the Dragon

The Targaryen family is central to the world of Game of Thrones, and their history is a major part of what makes the story so compelling. So it makes sense that the first spin-off series, House of the Dragon, focuses on them, and is based on George R.R. Martin’s book Fire & Blood from 2018. The show has been very successful, but some fans wish Martin had prioritized finishing The Winds of Winter instead of working on another project.

1) A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms

The characters in the new show, A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms, originally appeared in George R.R. Martin’s Tales of Dunk and Egg stories, and early reviews have been good. Set about 90 years before Game of Thrones, the series focuses on key people from Westeros’s past. Though the show itself is well-made, some fans worry that it’s diverting Martin’s focus from completing the long-awaited The Winds of Winter.
