It seems the mysterious figure watching over the Marvel multiverse has been showing up in more places than we initially thought. Fans have noticed, and now there’s a lot of online discussion about what these appearances could mean, beyond just big events happening. It’s clear, though, that he appears during key moments to emphasize how important he is to the bigger story and how everything is connected.
As a huge MCU fan, I’ve been fascinated by The Watcher, also known as Uatu. He’s this incredibly powerful being from another dimension whose job is basically to observe everything happening across the multiverse – but he’s not supposed to interfere. That rule got broken when Ultron found out about him, and ever since, we’ve been seeing Uatu pop up in different places and at different times. It’s got everyone wondering if he’ll play a role in the upcoming Avengers: Doomsday! I’ve been keeping track of every time he’s appeared so far, and I’m excited to share all those moments with you.
8) What If…?

The animated series What If…? features The Watcher more prominently than ever before – he not only narrates, but also takes center stage in some episodes. A key example is “What If…The Watcher Broke His Oath,” where he contemplates battling Ultron alongside Strange Supreme. Ultimately, he assembled a team to fight the dangerous AI, including Captain Carter, T’Challa, Prince Killmonger, Party Thor, and Gamora, dubbing them the Guardians of the Multiverse. After forming the team, The Watcher allowed Arnim Zola to transfer his consciousness into his body, observing their battle against Infinity Ultron. Once Zola and Killmonger were contained in a separate dimension by Strange Supreme, The Watcher then guided Natasha from Ultron’s universe to a reality where Natasha Romanoff had died at the hands of Hank Pym.
7) I Am Groot

Uatu narrates this animated short, sharing his thoughts as Groot discovers an ancient Drez-Lar temple. There, Groot receives a legendary prophecy – he’s the one who must save the universe. While Uatu isn’t thrilled with how Groot goes about it, he’s ultimately amazed that Groot actually succeeds.
6) X-Men ’97

This is a particularly bleak and upsetting appearance by Uatu, but that’s to be expected – his appearances usually signal major, often tragic, events. In this episode of X-Men ’97, he witnesses a devastating mutant massacre, where thousands are killed by Sentinels, including a massive, spider-like Sentinel called the Wild Sentinel, which fatally stabs Gambit. Even in his final moments, Gambit manages a heroic act, sacrificing himself to destroy the Wild Sentinel with a powerful blast of kinetic energy.
5) Your Friendly Neighborhood Spider-Man

Uatu, also known as The Watcher, made a very brief appearance in the first season finale of Your Friendly Neighborhood Spider-Man. During the episode “If This Be My Destiny…,” he can be seen in the background, observing a conversation between Doctor Strange and a Spider-Man from another universe – one where Spider-Man was trained by Norman Osborn.
4) Eyes of Wakanda

In 1896, two Wakandans face a difficult choice: complete their mission or betray their country to save the world. Their journey to Ethiopia to recover a vibranium artifact will have serious repercussions for the future. This is the very same artifact – an axe – that Erik Killmonger would later steal in 2019, prompting the Black Panther to travel back in time to prevent its retrieval.
3) Marvel Zombies

As usual, Uatu simply observed the events of the zombie apocalypse in Marvel Zombies, without intervening. He watched as Janet Van Dyne accidentally released a zombie virus from the Quantum Realm. Then, he witnessed Bruce Banner’s chaotic arrival in New York and his close call with a zombified Iron Man, Doctor Strange, Wong, Ebony Maw, and Cull Obsidian. Uatu explains through narration that Hank Pym’s attempt to save his wife actually started the outbreak, and the Avengers’ arrival, though heroic, ultimately doomed humanity to the virus.
2) Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2
Though it wasn’t widely known at the time, this movie actually marks the first appearance of The Watcher in the Marvel Cinematic Universe. It’s also where Peter Quill jokingly nicknames him “Giant Baby Man Cape Dude.” The film features a cameo by Stan Lee, shown in a spacesuit with three distinctive blue aliens – they have large bald heads, glowing blue eyes, and elaborate capes. Later, in a scene after the credits, these same aliens are seen leaving Lee behind, even as he asks them to stay.
1) Daredevil: Born Again

Fans spotted a hidden detail in the fourth episode of Daredevil: Born Again: the window Bullseye breaks looks remarkably like The Watcher’s head, with the lights inside mimicking his glowing eyes. This sparked a lot of excitement about a possible appearance of The Watcher in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, and Marvel seems to be hinting that it’s true. Brad Winderbaum, a Marvel executive, posted a picture of the scene on Instagram with the caption “Always watching…” While not an official confirmation, it’s probably the closest we’ll get for now.
