Be warned: this article contains spoilers for the first episode of A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms. However, we’ll avoid revealing any plot details from the Dunk & Egg books that might be used in future episodes of the show.
I just finished the first episode of A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms, and I already think Lyonel Baratheon is going to be a character everyone loves! This new Game of Thrones series is based on George R.R. Martin’s Dunk & Egg stories, and it follows those characters on all sorts of adventures. I think the show is starting off really strong, and even just the first episode showed me how different it is from Game of Thrones and House of the Dragon. It feels like something truly special.
HBO’s new Game of Thrones prequel takes place roughly 50 years before Robert Baratheon became king. Back then, Robert’s family only ruled over Storm’s End. This is where we meet Lyonel Baratheon in A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms. He’s introduced right away in the first episode and brings a lot of humor and personality to the Game of Thrones universe.
Lyonel Baratheon’s Role In A Knight Of The Seven Kingdoms Explained
In the first episode of A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms, Ser Duncan the Tall unexpectedly becomes friends with Ser Lyonel. After finding himself at Lyonel’s feast, Dunk was questioned about his purpose. Lyonel was initially annoyed by Dunk’s honest, straightforward answers, and challenged him to a dance. It was on the dance floor that Lyonel truly began to like Dunk, especially when Dunk, either courageously or clumsily, stepped on his foot.
The relationship between Dunk and Lyonel in A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms really highlights Dunk’s honesty. He didn’t try to impress Lyonel, and probably wouldn’t have been noticed if he had. This was unusual for a knight of noble birth. Beyond revealing Dunk’s personality, this friendship will likely play an important role in the story going forward.
Daniel Ings Plays Lyonel Baratheon In The Game Of Thrones Prequel – Where You Know The Actor From
Daniel Ings brings a wonderfully unpredictable energy to his role as Lyonel Baratheon in the Game of Thrones prequel series. This isn’t surprising, given his extensive acting experience spanning almost twenty years. While he’s worked on several films, Ings truly excels on television, and A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms is a great example of his talent.
While Rory Ings first appeared on television in 2010, he became better known for his role as Commander Mike Parker in The Crown between 2016 and 2017. In 2019, he appeared in an episode of the sci-fi series Black Mirror (“Smithereens”) and also began playing Dan in Sex Education, a role he continued until 2023. Most recently, in 2024, Ings starred as Frederick “Freddy” Horniman in The Gentlemen.
I’m really excited for what’s coming up for Ings! We know he’ll be back in A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms, which is great. But on top of that, he’s landed a part – they’re keeping the details secret for now – in the new Star Wars: Starfighter movie, slated for 2027. And after that, he’s going to be acting alongside Cythia Erivo in a British drama called Prime Fascie, though we don’t have a release date for that one yet.
Everything Else We Know About Lyonel Baratheon In Game Of Thrones’ History
Like many important characters in Game of Thrones, Lyonel Baratheon has a detailed backstory in George R.R. Martin’s writings. In A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms, we learn Lyonel was set to inherit Storm’s End and become its lord during the reign of King Aegon V Targaryen. He was initially a devoted supporter of the king, but when Aegon’s son cancelled his engagement to Lyonel’s daughter, Lyonel declared himself the Storm King and briefly rebelled against the Targaryens.
The revolt led by Lyonel was quickly defeated, and Aegon V allowed him to settle the dispute through a trial by combat against the leader of his personal guard. Lyonel lost and surrendered, so Aegon arranged a marriage between his daughter, Rhaelle, and Lyonel’s son, Ormund Baratheon.
Following Ormund’s time as Lord of Storm’s End, his son, Steffon, took over the position. Steffon’s son was Robert Baratheon, famously known from Game of Thrones as the first king of Westeros who wasn’t a Targaryen – though he was still related to King Aegon V. This makes Lyonel Baratheon Robert’s great-grandfather.
Why Daniel Ings’ Lyonel Baratheon Is Already A Fan Favorite Character
Many beloved characters in the Game of Thrones world have a similar quality: unpredictability. Characters like The Hound, Tyrion, Arya, and Oberyn are all a bit wild, and Lyonel, in the first episode of A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms, definitely fits that mold. He’s well-born and smart, but also clearly enjoys having fun. What makes Lyonel even more interesting is his surprising friendship with Dunk – it’s a funny pairing that’s easy to root for.
