Shawn Layden, formerly the head of PlayStation, has voiced criticism of Xbox’s recent decisions. Xbox is currently facing uncertainty after Asha Sharma, the current head of Xbox, announced a company “reset” last week. This reset could lead to the closure of several studios, including Compulsion Games, Double Fine, and Ninja Theory. Layden has now shared his perspective on the core issues facing the gaming company amidst these concerns.
Following a social media post, former PlayStation executive Shawn Layden expressed concern about Xbox’s leadership, suggesting they lack a strong grasp of the gaming market. He clarified he wasn’t criticizing Xbox maliciously, but believes their decision-making lacks clear direction, which has contributed to recent issues and confusion within the company.
Look, I don’t want to come across as someone who’s just complaining, but honestly, these decisions feel like they just don’t get how gaming works these days. It’s one of those things – if you understand the current landscape, you understand. And if you don’t… well, it shows.

Even though Shawn Layden left PlayStation in 2019, he oversaw a remarkably successful period for the company. As head of Sony Interactive Entertainment Worldwide Studios from 2014 to 2019 – most of the PlayStation 4’s lifespan – he helped PlayStation recover strongly from the challenges it faced with the PS3. During his tenure, the company released hit games like God of War, Bloodborne, Horizon Zero Dawn, Marvel’s Spider-Man, and many more.
Layden’s track record proves he understands what players are looking for, so his criticism of Xbox is noteworthy and potentially accurate.
Xbox is likely facing a difficult period with potential layoffs and significant changes coming in the near future. While things may get worse before they improve, Xbox still has a promising lineup of games planned for the rest of 2026, including titles like Halo: Campaign Evolved, Gears of War: E-Day, and Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 4.
