While Luke Skywalker is known as a major Star Wars hero, he hasn’t actually had many lightsaber battles in official storylines. This is largely because Lucasfilm has focused more on the earlier prequel era, the Clone Wars, and the time when the Empire was in power. The original trilogy era hasn’t been explored as much, with most of that storytelling happening in comics. Even Marvel, which publishes those comics, hasn’t often shown Luke fighting other lightsaber users.
Luke Skywalker’s appearance in Season 2 of The Mandalorian was a satisfying moment for many fans, but it doesn’t quite make the cut for our list of best lightsaber fights. While it showcased his abilities, he was fighting droids, which wasn’t a challenging match. He defeated them easily, highlighting the difference in their skill levels. Truly memorable lightsaber duels are rare, and these are the ones that stand out.
5. Luke Skywalker Versus Exim Panshard

Let’s begin with Exim Panshard, a powerful Sith Lord from the past whose spirit lived on inside his mask for thousands of years. While most of the battles we’ll discuss come from movies and shows, this one is different – it’s described in detail in Adam Christopher’s excellent novel, Shadow of the Sith. The book acts as a prelude to the sequel trilogy, following Luke Skywalker as he searches for the Sith world of Exegol. During his quest, Luke accidentally uncovers a secret plot and nearly learns about Palpatine’s return to life.
Palpatine, ever prepared, had backup plans in place. He provided a mask and lightsaber belonging to Exim Panshard to one of his followers – a member of the Acolytes of the Beyond, a Sith-leaning group he often utilized. Wearing the mask, this follower engaged Luke Skywalker in several impressive duels. These fights represent the closest we’ve seen to a full-blown lightsaber battle between Luke and a Sith Lord other than Darth Vader, and author Adam Christopher handles it brilliantly, making for a very exciting read. Shadow of the Sith is essential reading for anyone who loves Luke Skywalker.
4. Luke Skywalker Versus the Knights of Ren

Charles Soule and Will Sliney’s comic, The Rise of Kylo Ren, serves as another introduction to the sequel trilogy by telling the story of how Ben Solo became Kylo Ren – detailing his descent into darkness (or rather, how he was manipulated into it). The second issue includes a flashback showing Luke Skywalker and Ben’s first encounter with the Knights of Ren while exploring an old Jedi Temple from the High Republic era. The Knights of Ren were attempting to steal treasures from the temple, wrongly believing they could defeat Luke Skywalker in a fight.
Sliney’s artwork powerfully depicts Luke facing off against all the Knights of Ren by himself. The comic highlights Luke’s incredible strength, showing him easily defeat his enemies – even those wielding unusual weapons and red lightsabers – and exposing how inexperienced the Knights of Ren truly were. It’s a display of power that Ben Solo would later replicate with similar ease.
3. Luke Skywalker Versus Kylo Ren
The duel between Luke and Kylo Ren in Star Wars: The Last Jedi is a bit complex. Luke isn’t physically present; he’s projecting himself from a faraway planet, Ahch-To, and using the distraction to help Leia and the Resistance. The scene is beautifully filmed, and the director subtly hints at what’s happening throughout with clever visual details.
What’s most remarkable is Luke’s incredible skill as a duelist. Kylo Ren would immediately realize it the instant their lightsabers clashed – Luke simply moves and dodges, effortlessly avoiding every attack, much like he did in The Rise of Kylo Ren. This shows Luke as a true Jedi Master, capable of defeating opponents without even needing to strike. No other Jedi has ever achieved this level of mastery, and it’s genuinely impressive, even considering the ultimate sacrifice it cost him.
2. Luke Skywalker Versus Darth Vader (Round 1)

Now, let’s talk about a classic scene. The first lightsaber fight between Darth Vader and Luke Skywalker isn’t memorable because of Luke’s fighting ability – he’s still a beginner and doesn’t think he has a chance against Vader. At first, Vader lets Luke demonstrate his skills and is surprised by what Obi-Wan has taught him, even considering Luke as a potential apprentice. However, Vader then tries to trick Luke into a carbonite trap, but he misjudges his son, who proves harder to capture than expected.
This fight between Darth Vader and Luke Skywalker is so memorable because of the powerful emotions it evokes. Vader dominates Luke, demonstrating his superior strength and skill, then reveals the stunning truth: he is Luke’s father. This moment truly defined Star Wars, elevating it from a simple adventure to a multi-generational story. Despite being outmatched, this lightsaber duel remains one of Luke’s most important battles.
1. Luke Skywalker Versus Darth Vader (Round 2)

The most iconic lightsaber duel in Star Wars has to be the climactic fight between Darth Vader and Luke Skywalker aboard the Second Death Star. Having grown as a Jedi, Luke is now a formidable opponent, and the two quickly become equals, using everything around them in their battle. However, Luke isn’t fighting to win or destroy—he’s trying to save his father, Darth Vader. This dramatically affects how he fights; at first, he focuses on defending himself and stalling for time rather than attacking to kill.
When Leia’s true identity comes to light, everything shifts dramatically. Luke momentarily struggles with his anger, acting aggressively instead of calmly, and surprisingly overpowers Darth Vader – even cutting off his hand! This shocking turn shows how easily Luke could fall to the dark side, echoing Vader’s earlier attack on him in The Empire Strikes Back. Ultimately, Luke recognizes this danger and pulls back, proving he’s not only a talented fighter but also the most powerful force for good in the entire Star Wars saga.
