Despite its long run, Family Guy continues to be popular and doesn’t seem likely to end soon. Creator Seth MacFarlane recently offered an update on the possibility of a Family Guy movie. Known for successful shows in both animation and live-action, MacFarlane is constantly working on new projects. However, Family Guy remains incredibly important to fans of adult animation, boasting over 25 years’ worth of episodes.
In an interview with The Hollywood Reporter, Seth MacFarlane discussed his numerous projects, including the future of Family Guy and a long-discussed movie. He revealed that he does have an idea for a Family Guy film, but jokingly said he’s delaying it until after experiencing a significant career setback.
Family Guy Creator Shares Update for New Movie
Seth MacFarlane says he still thinks about making a Family Guy movie and has a pretty solid idea for what it would be. He jokingly described it as a ‘backup plan’ – something he’d turn to if his other projects flopped badly. When asked if a movie could happen while the show is still on TV, MacFarlane explained that he figures audiences might need a Family Guy film to ‘reset’ their expectations after a major professional failure on his part.
Seth MacFarlane has been considering a Family Guy movie for some time, but like other animated shows moving to film, it’s proving challenging to produce while also continuing the TV series. We saw with The Simpsons Movie that even successful transitions can take years – in that case, two decades before any sequel was seriously discussed. MacFarlane’s already packed schedule adds another layer of complexity to making a Family Guy movie happen.
Will a Family Guy Movie Actually Happen?
Rich Appel, an executive producer for Family Guy, mentioned Seth MacFarlane’s desire to make a movie last year. However, he explained why it hasn’t happened yet: MacFarlane wants to be heavily involved in the script, and currently doesn’t have enough time with his commitments to the Ted TV series and other projects. With so much else going on, work on a Family Guy movie has been put on hold.
More seasons of Family Guy are planned thanks to a renewal with Fox, and Season 25 is expected to air in 2027. A new spinoff series focusing on Stewie is also being developed, and will feature stories separate from the main show. Plus, if a Family Guy movie is made, it would join a growing list of animated films.
