It’s frustrating, but not shocking, that Bethesda released a very buggy game on PS5, even though it’s been out on other systems for over two years.
While not everyone is experiencing crashes in Starfield, the sheer number of reports was too significant for the developers to overlook. They had to address the problem.
Bethesda has released two updates to address issues with the game, which is good to see. While the first update took a full week to arrive, and the second just came out last week, it’s still a step in the right direction.
The latest update seemed to suggest the studio had finished addressing crashes specific to the PS5. Because of this, we decided to retest Starfield to see how it performed.
We’ve been back to playing Starfield after the newest update, and we’ve been testing it thoroughly. We’ve unfortunately run into quite a few game-freezing bugs ourselves – after our initial review, it’s important to note – and wanted to see if the patch fixed them while we continued exploring the game.
After playing for almost 50 hours, we’re feeling pretty confident that Bethesda has fixed the biggest issues causing crashes in the sci-fi RPG on PlayStation 5.
The bad news is that the experience is still far from perfect. Classic Bethesda, etc.
So, as far as we could tell, there were four or five key crashing issues that had to be addressed:
- Crashing when approaching a busy area with lots of NPC activity
- Crashing when exploring a planet’s surface
- Crashing when building an outpost
- Crashing when building or modifying ship
- Random crashes when talking to NPCs
We encountered several crashes that we could reproduce ourselves. For instance, while driving our vehicle around the planet Akila, we found that simply trying to get near Akila City – a key location in the game – would consistently cause the game to crash.
Building outposts frequently caused the game to crash, often freezing when opening menus or placing objects.
Some crashes happened unexpectedly. It appeared the more time we spent on a planet, the more likely the game was to crash completely.
Good news! Most of the crashes we were seeing have now been fixed. We can’t reliably make the game crash anymore like we used to.
So, I’ve been playing for around 20 hours now, and honestly, the game has been pretty stable. I did run into a couple of crashes, though – maybe two or three times. One happened when I was entering orbit after finishing a big quest for one of the factions, but I haven’t been able to make it happen again. The others were just random, and I couldn’t figure out what caused them either.
Throughout most of our time playing after the update, we used the game’s 60 frames-per-second mode. We also tried the other graphics settings for a few hours and didn’t encounter any major problems.
A bunch of us were saying that tweaking the graphics settings – especially on the PS5 Pro – might be causing more crashes, but it was tough to actually prove if that was really happening.
Overall, Starfield appears to be much more stable on PS5 now compared to its initial release on April 7th. It took nearly three weeks, but in our testing, the game no longer crashes frequently.
If you’re unsure about getting the game, it’s worth knowing that it still has some technical issues. Players often experience slowdowns and choppy gameplay, no matter how you adjust the graphics settings.
Now that the game’s crashing issues seem to be fixed, we’re hoping Bethesda will keep improving the PS5 version. However, considering their history, we’re not expecting any major changes.
Hey everyone, I’m playing Starfield on my PS5 and I’m really enjoying it so far! I’m curious though – has anyone else been experiencing any crashes? Let’s hope we can all keep exploring without any issues – send some good vibes down in the comments!
