Even though the announcement of Dawntrail had a few initial issues, excitement for Final Fantasy 14 is growing again, particularly after the Evercold reveal at Fan Fest 2026. The new expansion is coming in January 2027 and will significantly update the game’s combat system and Armory. Before that, players on the new Nintendo Switch 2 will be able to join the millions of Warriors of Light in August.
Square Enix announced at their recent event that players will get a month of early access to the game to help ensure everything runs smoothly. The trial won’t limit how much you can play, and it’s even including the popular Shadowbringers expansion! That’s a lot of content to experience, though free players will have some limitations.
Okay, so after the free trial ends, you’ll need to subscribe every month to keep playing. Good news though – if you already play, you get a 50% discount! Now, Nintendo Switch Online isn’t required to play this game, but it’s a separate thing, and honestly, that might make the game a little pricier than on other consoles. We’ll just have to wait and see how it all shakes out.
If you’ve been hoping to play Final Fantasy 14 on the Nintendo Switch or add another game to your Switch 2 wishlist, keep an eye out for it later this year. As for Evercold, a big update is coming with a new raid series, cities, dungeons, an increased level cap (from 100 to 110), and two new character classes to play.
