After a long wait, *Final Fantasy 7 Remake Intergrade* is coming to the Switch 2 on January 22, 2026. Square Enix has announced that while the game will be available to purchase digitally from the eShop, a physical version will also be offered. However, instead of a traditional game cartridge, the physical release will be a ‘Game-Key Card’ that requires players to download the full game to their console.
It looks like *Final Fantasy 7 Remake Intergrade* will likely be the largest game available on the Switch 2 in terms of how much storage it needs. Players will need to download about 87.9 GB of data (according to Eurogamer), which will take up a significant portion of the console’s 256 GB of internal storage. To put that in perspective, even other versions of *Final Fantasy 7 Remake* are quite large – the PC version, for example, requires 94.24 GB of space.
When *Final Fantasy 7 Remake Intergrade* launches, it will become the biggest game available for the Nintendo Switch 2, surpassing *WWE 2K25*. *WWE 2K25* previously held that title, with a file size of 73.2 GB.
The substantial file size of *Final Fantasy 7 Remake Intergrade* is probably why it’s getting a physical release on Game-Key Cards instead of a traditional game cartridge. Nintendo Switch cartridges have a storage limit of about 64 GB and can be costly to produce. Additionally, games might run better from the Switch 2’s internal storage than from a cartridge, as cartridges typically have slower data transfer speeds.
Earlier this month, it was announced that *Final Fantasy 7 Remake Intergrade* is coming to the Nintendo Switch 2. This version will include everything from the original game, plus the *INTERmission* DLC. *INTERmission* lets players experience the story of *Remake* through the eyes of Yuffie Kisaragi, offering a new perspective on the events.
Square Enix has announced that all three games in the *Remake* series will be available on all gaming platforms. This includes *Final Fantasy 7 Rebirth*, which will now be playable on the Nintendo Switch 2 and Xbox Series X/S. They’ve also stated that the third game in the series-currently without a title-will be released on PC, Xbox Series X/S, and Nintendo Switch 2 at the same time as its PlayStation 5 launch.
Final Fantasy 7 Remake first came out on PlayStation 4 in 2020, and has since been released on other systems. In February 2024, a sequel called Final Fantasy 7 Rebirth followed, initially launching exclusively on PlayStation 5 before becoming available on PC nearly a year later.
Since then, Square Enix has shifted its approach to releasing games, choosing to launch on multiple platforms instead of making deals to keep them exclusive to just one. They also intend to bring more of their older games to new platforms as well.
