Final Fantasy IX Remake possibly cancelled according to latest rumors — Which may be the saddest way to celebrate this legendary game’s 25th anniversary

For several months now, whispers have been circulating that Square Enix might be working on a remake of the cherished Final Fantasy IX, a favorite among the series’ fanbase and the final primary installment launched for the PlayStation One.

The buzz surrounding potential rumors about a remake has grown stronger due to Square Enix’s recent display of new artworks, merchandise, and a website commemorating the 25th anniversary of Final Fantasy IX. This could hint at an upcoming announcement on the game’s birthday, which falls on July 7.

It appears that today, July 7th, we don’t have any updates regarding a remake of Final Fantasy IX from Square Enix, which is certainly disappointing. However, what we do have is a compilation video on YouTube showcasing some of the game’s most memorable moments to remind us of its greatness.

It seems an additional piece of speculation has surfaced, this time from well-known tipster ‘Natethehate’, hinting at the possibility that the remake of Final Fantasy IX could potentially be scrapped.

NateTheHate, as mentioned by HazzadorGamin on X, stated that the project is currently under development based on his last check. However, he plans to double-check for a more updated status because he heard around a month ago that it might be in trouble or even cancelled. He only had one source suggesting cancellation and needs to verify the information thoroughly.

It’s generally wise to treat rumors cautiously, but consider this: The user ‘NateTheHate’ previously claimed that Final Fantasy VII Remake and Final Fantasy XIV would be available on Xbox. Interestingly enough, this prediction came true when Final Fantasy XVI was secretly released on Xbox alongside Final Fantasy VII Remake, which is set to arrive on Xbox in Winter 2025.

It seems quite plausible that rumors about the cancellation of the Final Fantasy IX Remake might indeed prove accurate, which would undoubtedly be a devastating way to mark the 25th anniversary for one of the most exceptional Japanese Role-Playing Games (JRPG) in history.

It’s a sad day to be a fan of Final Fantasy IX

After such anticipation, what we’re left with seems rather meager: just merchandise, a compilation video, and whispers that the remake of Final Fantasy IX might not materialize at all.

It’s only fitting that Final Fantasy IX receives a superior celebration for its 25th anniversary, given my belief in its status as one of the greatest video games ever created.

The narrative captivated me with its enchanting allure, thrilling escapades, and emotional depth. Its tactical battles and character progression kept me engaged, while its characters were delightful and left a lasting impression. Moreover, the game’s universe abounded in hidden gems, additional missions, and mini-games that enthralled me for countless hours.

Among the handful of games I’ve experienced, Final Fantasy IX stands out as one that has moved me to tears, an accomplishment considering I endured the most heart-wrenching scenes in Silent Hill 2, Final Fantasy VII, Mass Effect, Persona, and Dark Souls without a single tear.

I’d be thrilled if Final Fantasy IX received a contemporary remake, enhancing its charming art style with updated graphics, while preserving the original storyline’s cinematic quality. Additionally, it would be exciting to encounter new challenges and bosses not present in the initial game.

Instead of switching to action-RPG combat like in the remakes of Final Fantasy VII, VII Rebirth, and XVI, I’d much rather see the Final Fantasy IX Remake preserve its original turn-based battle system.

I don’t mind real-time battles, but I personally prefer the slower-paced, tactical experience of turn-based combat. Games like Clair Obscur: Expedition 33 have shown that turn-based JRPGs can be both relaxing and profitable, and it seems Square Enix is starting to take notice, possibly considering a return to turn-based combat in future mainline Final Fantasy games.

Despite NateTheHate stating that he requires further validation from his resources before definitively confirming the cancellation of Final Fantasy IX Remake, there remains a possibility that it could become a reality in the future. We’ll need to stay tuned for upcoming rumors and official updates from Square Enix to determine if this game materializes or not.
