Final Fantasy VII Remake coming to Xbox is cool โ€” but I’m sticking with the PC version and mods that let me fight Darth Vader

As an analyst, I had the pleasure of witnessing a long-awaited dream come true for Xbox fans on June 8, 2025, during the Summer Game Fest Xbox Games Showcase. To my delight, Square Enix unveiled the much-anticipated Xbox port of Final Fantasy VII: Remake, which has been a wish list item for many years. In an unexpected twist, they also announced a simultaneous release of Final Fantasy XVI on Xbox as well.

The release of the Xbox version of this game is planned for winter 2025 on both Xbox Series X and S consoles. This means that fans of Japanese Role-Playing Games (JRPGs) on Xbox will finally get to experience the highly praised remake of the most famous installment in the Final Fantasy series.

From a personal perspective, I’m thrilled that Xbox enthusiasts can soon experience this game after their long wait. However, I firmly believe that the PC version of Final Fantasy VII Remake will remain the better choice, primarily because it offers the advantage of modifications.

The modding community for Final Fantasy VII Remake on PC is vast. Following the game’s release on PC in 2021 after breaking free from PlayStation exclusivity, fans have been developing an array of eccentric, offbeat, and even mind-boggling mods that effectively reimagine Final Fantasy VII Remake as a nearly new game.

This set of modifications encompasses alterations such as replacing the backdrop music, providing fresh wardrobes for characters, exchanging character designs with figures from different works, and further enhancements.

As someone eagerly anticipating the release of Final Fantasy VII Remake on Xbox, let me reminisce about the incredible modifications available for the PC version. Here’s a sneak peek at some of the most awesome mods that have graced this classic game.

Be warned, this list will contain spoilers for Final Fantasy VII Remake, so read at your own risk.

Final Fantasy VII Remake PC mods โ€“ Star Wars

As a bystander, it’s quite clear that the Final Fantasy series draws significant inspiration from Star Wars. In many of these games (particularly Final Fantasy II, IV, VI, VII, and XII), we see groups of underdog rebels valiantly battling against oppressive empires controlled by dark lords who share striking resemblances with Darth Vader in terms of appearance, abilities, and moral ambiguity.

From where I stand, it’s not hard to picture devotees of both Final Fantasy and Star Wars concocting unique crossovers by crafting star-wars themed modifications within the realm of Final Fantasy VII Remake.

This collection features modifications such as one created by GeorgeIE00, where Luke Skywalker takes the place of Cloud Strife, and another by TheWolfster that swaps out their weapons for lightsabers.

Or more concisely: These mods swap Cloud Strife with Luke Skywalker (by GeorgeIE00) and replace their weapons with lightsabers (by TheWolfster).

Among all the remarkable Star Wars and Final Fantasy VII Remake mods, the standout ones are the Darth Vader (modified as Sephiroth) by The Wolfster and the Darth Vader Voice Replacement mod by NormieMods. These two modifications have left a significant impact, making them some of the most captivating in the entire series.

1. In the first alteration, Sephiroth is swapped out for Darth Vader as a character.

2. The second modification replaces Sephiroth’s English voiceover with an AI-generated voice that mimics the deep, resonant tones of James Earl Jones, who is famously known for voicing Darth Vader.

When these modifications are added alongside the Lightsaber mod, Sephiroth undergoes a dramatic transformation into the ominous character known as Darth Vader, a match that’s both chilling and perfectly suited to him.

In many ways, Sephiroth’s behavior and lines in Final Fantasy VII Remake resemble what one might expect from Darth Vader in films and television series, and these modifications support this idea.

Additionally, instead of Sephiroth’s arrogant expression, showing his character with Darth Vader’s impassive helmet creates a sense of terror when he manipulates or battles against Cloud, making those scenes truly chilling now.

Since Sephiroth’s thoughts are now hidden behind his helmet, you must rely on your creativity and interpret his physical cues to grasp his personality, similar to how we deciphered Darth Vader’s character in the original Star Wars trilogy. It’s a fascinating twist, and I find it intriguing!

It’s truly exciting to watch Darth Vader engage in combat with Cloud Strife and then attempt to recruit him using dialogues reminiscent of his scenes from Star Wars Episode V: The Empire Strikes Back. This cross-over scene is simply incredible!

Final Fantasy VII Remake PC mods โ€“ Kingdom Hearts

Discussing the topic of crossovers, it’s worth mentioning that the Final Fantasy VII Remake often hosts modifications inspired by Kingdom Hearts, a connection that seems fitting considering the regular appearance of Final Fantasy VII characters within that franchise.

Additional modifications available are the Cloud Kingdom Hearts Costume and Sephiroth Kingdom Hearts Costume, both created by ColossalCake. These mods accurately reproduce the distinctive outfits of Cloud and Sephirot from Kingdom Hearts 1 in high-definition quality for Final Fantasy VII Remake.

On Nexus, SteamHeat skillfully crafted a replica of the bandaged Buster Sword from Kingdom Hearts 1, using the Kingdom Hearts Buster Sword mod, perfectly matching the Cloud Kingdom Hearts ensemble.

By merging the Cloud Kingdom Hearts and Darth Vader mods, you might get a glimpse into a hypothetical scenario of what Kingdom Hearts 4 could potentially appear as, given that Star Wars belongs to Disney.

Another cool mod for Kingdom Hearts to try out is Sephiroth – Ansem (Kingdom Hearts) by MemoryH.

In this modification, Sephiroth is swapped out for the appearance of Ansem, a significant antagonist in Kingdom Hearts. This alteration includes specially crafted facial animations that mimic Sephiroth’s emotions during key scenes.

The mod adds an extra weapon for Ansem – the Blade of Ruin, taking the place of Sephiroth’s Masamune sword.

To fully transform your Kingdom Hearts experience using the Ansem mod, you might want to download the “Darkness Of The Unknown Sephiroth BGM mod” by raycopper. This modification swaps the music heard during the climactic battle in the Final Fantasy VII remake with the final boss theme from Kingdom Hearts 1, thus creating a seamless blend of both games’ soundtracks in your gameplay.

Final Fantasy VII Remake PC mods โ€“ Monster Hunter

Since the collaboration between Final Fantasy VII spin-off mobile game, Final Fantasy VII: Ever Crisis, and Capcom’s Monster Hunter franchise resulted in Monster Hunter-themed costumes in the crossover event, fans have been incorporating these costumes into their versions of Final Fantasy VII Remake through modifying the game.

A devotee called Kazumashirou, instead of being satisfied with merely the Ever Crisis crossover material, went a step further and incorporated one of the most iconic weapons from Monster Hunter series, the Wyvern Ignition Greatsword, into Final Fantasy VII Remake.

In the game Monster Hunter World, a fan-designed sword with rocket power made its official entrance. Now, it’s Cloud’s turn to brandish this powerful weapon thanks to an exciting modification.

Final Fantasy VII Remake PC mods โ€“ Other Final Fantasy games

Previously, collaborations between different Final Fantasy games were officially established, particularly with Final Fantasy XIV. However, the remake of Final Fantasy VII never engaged in such crossovers.

Some enthusiasts opted to alter the game by implementing a variety of modifications. These modifications allow characters to don costumes and wield weapons from past Final Fantasy titles, or even metamorphose into characters from earlier games through character model swapping modifications.

Final Fantasy VII Remake PC mods โ€“ Music

The original soundtrack of Final Fantasy VII Remake’s standard edition is simply outstanding. Not only does it authentically replicate the music from the original game, but it also introduces some fresh, captivating compositions that will stick in your memory.

Instead, certain enthusiasts opt for the classic soundtrack from the original Final Fantasy VII on PlayStation One, such as CodeBurstZero. This creative modder has compiled a set of modifications that swap out the soundtrack in Final Fantasy VII Remake with the original game’s music.

Additionally, other creators have crafted personalized soundtracks for boss battles, reintroduced tunes from earlier Final Fantasy content, and rearranged song positions to enhance the atmosphere of specific game sequences.

Final Fantasy VII Remake PC mods โ€“ Miscellaneous

These mods make Final Fantasy VII Remake’s PC port the best place to play

Here, you’ll find some of the most exciting modifications currently on offer for enhancing your gaming experience with Final Fantasy VII Remake.

It’s important to mention that just like Final Fantasy VII Remake, Final Fantasy VII Rebirth is accumulating its own collection of PC modifications. But due to its recent release on PC (at the time of this writing), it doesn’t have as extensive a catalog of mods as Final Fantasy VII Remake does.

Once it’s officially confirmed that Final Fantasy VII Rebirth is coming to Xbox, we’ll create a fresh list highlighting all the creative modifications fans have made as a tribute to one of Square Enix’s outstanding PC games from recent years.
