The popular drama Fire Country is planning to grow its universe with a new spinoff series. This strategy is similar to the one Dick Wolf used to successfully expand the One Chicago franchise.
According to Deadline, CBS is developing a new series connected to Fire Country. The currently unnamed show, like Fire Country and its first spin-off Sheriff Country, will be set in Edgewater. It’s planned as a medical drama, focusing on a team of doctors who work with the firefighters and law enforcement already featured in those shows. This approach is similar to NBC’s successful One Chicago franchise, which started with Chicago Fire and then added police and medical dramas (Chicago P.D. and Chicago Med respectively).
As a big fan of the Country universe, I’m hearing some exciting news about a possible medical drama spin-off! Apparently, the plan is to introduce the lead character of the new show on Sheriff Country first, just like they did with Morena Baccarin. She actually first appeared as Sheriff Mickey Fox in an episode of Fire Country before Sheriff Country even started! And it sounds like we might even get some big crossover events, bringing characters from two or three of the Country shows together – kind of like what One Chicago does. We already got a taste of that earlier this month with a two-hour crossover between Fire Country and Sheriff Country, which was awesome!
The new show is currently being developed and doesn’t have writers yet. Matt Lopez, the showrunner of Sheriff Country, will be an executive producer. Max Thieriot from Fire Country, Joan Rater, Tony Phelan, Jerry Bruckheimer, KristieAnne Reed, and Jerry Bruckheimer Television will also serve as executive producers.
There’s still a chance Fire Country could get another spin-off series focusing on a different group of firefighters. Originally, plans were in the works for a spin-off called Fire Country: Surfside starring Jared Padalecki (known for Supernatural), who made a guest appearance on Fire Country. However, that show hasn’t been officially approved yet, so it’s uncertain if it will actually happen.
