First ever British Sign Language dating show announced – and you won’t have to wait long for it

A first-of-its-kind dating show featuring British Sign Language is set to premiere on television just in time for Valentine’s Day.

Hold My Hand is a new dating show premiering on LumoTV, the top streaming service created by and for Deaf people and sign language users. The show follows a group of Deaf and CODA singles as they date each other using British Sign Language (BSL), showing all the excitement and challenges of finding love.

This groundbreaking dating show is unique because it fully celebrates Deaf culture, language, and the experiences of the Deaf community, setting a new standard for representation and inclusion in reality television.

The new three-part series starts on Friday, February 13th, and will be presented by Hermon and Heroda Berhane – the well-known identical twins behind Being Her. They run a fashion and travel platform that’s gained recognition for showcasing Deaf representation in lifestyle content.

Over the course of the show, the contestants will get to know each other by working through different challenges and having honest conversations. This will help them see if they have a real connection that goes beyond just talking.

Each episode features a new group of single people who go through three rounds of challenges. Throughout these rounds, people are eliminated based on challenges and voting, and as relationships develop, the group shrinks. At the end of each episode, successful couples are formed. One episode specifically focuses on LGBTQIA+ individuals, showcasing the diversity within the community.

This series offers a fresh and captivating look at dating, showcasing everything from initial connections to blossoming romance and tough decisions. What makes it truly special is its innovative approach, created with the vision of the world’s first Deaf TV commissioner.

LumoTV CEO Camilla Arnold explained that their new show, “Hold My Hand,” represents a significant shift in how Deaf narratives are presented on television. She noted that British Sign Language has often been overlooked or added as an extra element in mainstream shows and reality TV, and this show aims to change that.

This show takes a fresh approach by showcasing Deaf culture in a lively and engaging way, with the potential to reach a wide audience. We aim to entertain both Deaf and hearing viewers, hoping to spark interest in British Sign Language and offer a new perspective on modern relationships.
