The new HBO series based on Harry Potter has given fans their first glimpse of a character who didn’t appear in the original films, and it’s confirmed another difference from the books. We’ve already learned about several changes, like Lucius Malfoy showing up earlier in the first story than he did in the books, and other adjustments from the 2001 movie adaptation. This isn’t too surprising, though, considering HBO is dedicating eight episodes to the first book, instead of condensing it into a two-and-a-half-hour film. This expanded format allows for a more faithful adaptation without needing to cut content for time.
Many fans were disappointed when Peeves the Poltergeist, a playful and disruptive character in the Harry Potter books, was left out of the first movie. Fortunately, Peeves will be included in the new HBO series, Harry Potter & The Philosopher’s Stone. However, he wasn’t shown in any trailers or preview footage until recently. High-resolution concept art of Peeves has now surfaced online (shared by the Instagram account Magicallybrothers), giving fans their first clear look at how the character will be portrayed in the series.

Peeves’ Return Fixes Chris Columbus’ Biggest Regret
Director Chris Columbus has said that removing the character of Peeves – originally intended to be played by the late Rik Mayall – was his biggest mistake when making Harry Potter and the Sorcerer’s Stone. While it’s understandable why he did it, as Peeves wasn’t essential to the story and would have added complications and length to the film. The new Harry Potter series on HBO doesn’t face that same problem.
The recently revealed concept art for Peeves the poltergeist shows a surprisingly different look than what appeared in the films. Instead of the colorful, harlequin-like character described in the books, this version resembles something from The Addams Family. This design also differs from the book’s description of Peeves as a small man with a hat covered in bells and an orange bow tie – details that are missing from the concept art, indicating another change from the original source material. It remains to be seen if this concept art will be the final design for HBO’s series.
