The upcoming Star City, a spin-off of For All Mankind, will feature characters fans recognize, but with new actors playing the roles.
As a total space race buff, I’m really excited about this prequel! It’s set in the USSR during the 60s and 70s – around the same time as the early seasons of For All Mankind – but this time, it tells the story from the Soviet side. The cool twist? In this alternate history, the Soviets were actually the first to land a man on the moon!
As a critic, I’m really intrigued by how ‘Star City’ is expanding the ‘For All Mankind’ universe. We’re going to see the origins of some key players – specifically, younger versions of Irina Morozova and Sergei Nikulov. Svetlana Efremova and Piotr Adamczyk brilliantly portray these characters in ‘For All Mankind,’ and now Agnes O’Casey and Josef Davies will be stepping into those roles to show us how it all began. It’s a fascinating way to build out the backstory and add depth to characters we already know and love.
At a Star City screening event with TopMob, co-creator and showrunner Matt Wolpert explained that recasting those roles was difficult. He emphasized they greatly appreciated the actors who originally played the characters.
We really saw this as a chance to discover actors who could embody the younger versions of the original characters. It was crucial to find performers who truly captured the spirit of those roles. In the case of Sergei, Josef Davies perfectly portrays his intelligence and kind nature.
With Irina Morozova, it’s been fascinating to explore her backstory in ‘For All Mankind.’ We meet her as a strong, composed woman, but we’re excited to show how she wasn’t always that way. Seeing her evolution and how she became the person we know is a really compelling story for us to tell.

Davies and O’Casey told TopMob they used the original actors’ performances as inspiration when developing the younger versions of their characters for Star City.
Davies explained that this portrayal focuses on a younger Sergei, showcasing a different energy and the experiences that will shape him into the character audiences eventually know.

During a question-and-answer session after the screening, O’Casey explained that viewers of ‘For All Mankind’ will encounter the character at a new point in her journey. He noted that throughout the series, she’s constantly discovering what it takes to achieve her goals.
The cast of Star City also includes Anna Maxwell Martin, Rhys Ifans, Adam Nagaitis, Solly McLeod, Ruby Ashbourne Serkis, Alice Englert, and Priya Kansara, joining previously announced stars Davies and O’Casey.
Star City will premiere on Apple TV+ on Friday 29 May.
