Launched in 1968, Weekly Shonen Jump has become the best-selling manga magazine ever. For decades, it’s published many famous series like Dragon Ball, One Piece, Naruto, and Bleach. The magazine remains incredibly popular today, with current hits like Jujutsu Kaisen and My Hero Academia shaping modern manga. Remarkably, only 23 manga series have ever sold over 100 million copies, and at least 12 of those appeared in Weekly Shonen Jump. While titles like Dragon Ball have become legendary, some once-popular series have faded from readers’ memories over time.
Motoei Shinzawa’s *High School! Kimengumi* ran from 1980 to 1987, and was preceded by its prequel, *3-nen Kimengumi*, which ran for two years. An anime adaptation of the series was released in 1982, and it was quite popular in Japan at the time. While it’s largely been forgotten with the rise of newer shows, *High School! Kimengumi* is now gaining attention again after many years, with talk of a possible new anime release.
High School! Kimengumi May Be Announcing an Anime Reboot

On October 13th, Noitamina, the anime block on Fuji TV, announced they would be making an announcement on October 17th. Although they didn’t share any details, a popular X account known for reporting on *Shonen Jump* series, @WSJ_manga, reported that the announcement caused fans to speculate about a possible anime remake of *High School! Kimengumi*. Another X account, @MangaMoguraRE, noted that these rumors are mainly spreading among Japanese fans, who are more familiar with the series than international audiences.
This month also saw the launch of a new X (formerly Twitter) account, @kimengumi_anime, and a website for the anime. This timing is ideal, as October 2025 will be the 40th anniversary of the original manga – a significant event that deserves a special project. While all signs point to an unexpected reboot being announced, we’ll have to wait for an official confirmation.
High School! Kimengumi is a funny and lighthearted comedy series filled with wacky situations and memorable characters. It follows the adventures of five junior high school boys who create a club called the “Kimengumi.” The story continues with the boys getting lucky and befriending the most popular girl in school, and their ongoing rivalry with other school groups in various sports competitions. Because the original anime wasn’t widely available outside of Japan, a potential reboot would be a fresh introduction to the series for most international viewers.
