Forgotten Harry Potter First Edition Found in Attic Officially Breaks a World Record

It’s hard to believe it’s been almost thirty years since the first Harry Potter book came out! As someone who grew up reading about Harry, it really doesn’t feel that long ago. But time has definitely made those early copies special. Unlike most books from that time, first editions of Harry Potter and the Philosopher’s Stone are now highly collectible. I remember when it first appeared in UK bookstores in June 1997, nobody had any idea what a huge hit it would become. Because of that, only a very limited number – just 500 hardcover and 5,000 paperback copies – were printed in the first edition, and now they’re incredibly valuable!

A remarkably well-preserved, first-edition paperback copy of Harry Potter and the Philosopher’s Stone recently sold for a record-breaking price at Hansons Auctioneers in the UK. The book, which had been stored in an attic for decades without being read, was initially estimated to sell for between £7,000 and £10,000 (about $9,400 to $13,400). However, it ultimately fetched £17,000, significantly exceeding the previous record for a paperback copy of £12,000.

Harry Potter First Edition Sells for Thousands

Jim Spencer of Rare Book Auctions stated that this sale far exceeded the previous record, but he wasn’t surprised. He explained the book was in excellent condition, having been stored carefully. He also noted it’s remarkable that first edition Harry Potter paperbacks are now selling for prices comparable to hardback editions from ten years ago.

As a huge Harry Potter fan, I was so fascinated to hear Katrina McNicol talk about her first edition copy of Harry Potter and the Philosopher’s Stone! She explained that she didn’t actually buy it, but received it as part of a set of books sent to her weekly because of her job at a magazine. Apparently, they’d send books that matched the magazine’s featured stories – pretty cool, right?

She explained that she used to get over twenty books to review every week, and couldn’t possibly write about them all. She wasn’t sure why she’d kept this particular book—even before the Harry Potter craze started—but she’d carried it with her through several moves, and she was very happy she had.

The auction listing described the book’s condition, mentioning small imperfections like slight spine wear. However, they emphasized that it was an exceptionally well-preserved copy of the rare first edition, and the best one they had ever sold.

You know, these flyers really meant something to us back then. They weren’t precious – we’d trade them with friends, stuff them in our bags, and yeah, probably get them a little sticky with juice and covered in doodles! But this one… this one is incredible. It’s like finding a piece of the past exactly as it was, completely untouched. It’s honestly like it just came off the press yesterday.

While finding a first edition of the book is uncommon, there are a few specific details to check for in UK copies to confirm its authenticity. These include the author, J.K. Rowling, being listed as “Joanne Rowling” on the copyright page, a misspelling of “Philosopher’s” on the back cover, and the phrase “1 wand” appearing twice on page 53 in Harry’s school supplies list.

While this paperback copy of Harry Potter and the Philosopher’s Stone is a record-breaker for its format, it’s much less rare than the first edition hardcover copies. Only 500 hardcovers were originally printed, and one sold for £85,000 at Rare Books Auction in 2024. However, a hardcover copy fetched an even higher price – $471,000 – at Heritage Auctions in 2021.
