Playground Games has announced that over six million people have played Forza Horizon 6, but hasn’t released official sales numbers. However, Rhys Elliot from Alinea Analytics estimates that around 4.9 million copies of the game have been sold to date.
Forza Horizon 6 has generated over $325 million in revenue on PC and Xbox Series X/S. Approximately 5 million copies have been sold in total, and about 1.7 million of those were the premium edition which included early access – three days before the official release.
Elliot estimates that roughly 42% of the game’s 2.1 million copies sold were on Xbox consoles, PCs, and cloud services, while Steam accounted for 2.8 million copies. It’s significant that the game performed so well on Xbox even with its availability on Game Pass. This translates to Xbox generating around 51% of the game’s total revenue, compared to Steam’s 49%. The reason for this is that Microsoft doesn’t have to pay Steam a fee when players purchase the game through the Microsoft Store.
Elliot noted that Xbox had a remarkably strong showing, with Forza Horizon 6 attracting over 3 million players through Game Pass in addition to the 2.1 million who purchased the game directly. Despite selling fewer copies than Steam, Forza Horizon 6 on Xbox is actually bringing in more overall revenue – around 51% compared to Steam’s 49%.
Differences in revenue between platforms are largely due to regional pricing. As Elliot pointed out, most Xbox players are located in Western countries. Steam, however, has a wider global audience. China, Japan, and Brazil are Steam’s second, fourth, and sixth largest markets for Forza Horizon 6, and Steam benefits from offering different prices in those regions.
Despite the success of Forza Horizon 6, potential revenue is still being missed because of Xbox Game Pass. Analysts estimate over 3 million players are accessing the game through the subscription service instead of purchasing it separately.
So, it looks like this is how Microsoft’s doing things with their games on Steam now. Basically, Steam handles all the sales, Game Pass keeps Xbox players hooked, and releasing games on both platforms at the same time is working perfectly. Plus, they’re planning a PS5 release later, which means even more people will be able to play – that’s awesome!
Data from Steam shows that almost half (44.6%) of Forza Horizon 6 players were previously fans of the series, having played Forza Horizon 5. Around 28.9% had also played Forza Horizon 4. On Xbox (including PC, console, and cloud), the numbers are even higher thanks to Game Pass: 93.3% of Forza Horizon 6 players on Xbox had played 5, and 76.5% had played 4.
Looking at how well other games have sold, Elliot thinks Forza Horizon 6 could have sold even better – potentially surpassing titles like Resident Evil Requiem (which sold 7.1 million copies) – if it had been released on PlayStation 5 at the same time. Currently, Forza Horizon 6 is number four in sales, behind Resident Evil Requiem, Slay the Spire 2, and Crimson Desert.
According to an analyst, the PlayStation 5 launch of Forza Horizon 6 later this year will be a crucial indicator for Xbox. Data shows how well Forza Horizon 5 performed on PS5, and current projections suggest Forza Horizon 6 will sell even better, despite the initial excitement of having Forza games on PlayStation starting to fade.
