From season 4 star Harold Perrineau teases haunting implications for Boyd after monstrous return

Believe it or not, things are about to get worse for Boyd in season 4 of From.

The last time we saw Boyd (Harold Perrineau), he unexpectedly encountered a former foe—the now-grown and menacing Smiley, who was originally the child Fatima was protecting.

Perrineau explained in a recent interview that his character feels the weight of knowing he can do everything in his power to help, but it still might not be enough to keep his loved ones safe. He described a desperate feeling, saying even resorting to violence wouldn’t guarantee their protection.

In season 2, Boyd believed he had finally gotten rid of Smiley by transferring the unusual creatures from his blood into the monster. This was a rare win for Boyd and the town of Fromville, which made the events of the season 3 finale especially painful.

Perrineau described a common feeling as a parent: doing everything you can to protect your kids, only to be reminded that you can’t control everything. It’s frustrating when things don’t go as planned, but ultimately, it’s a very relatable experience.

He admitted he’s uncomfortable with the subject matter, saying it doesn’t feel good to discuss, even with me. However, he also acknowledged that it creates exciting and entertaining fantasy and horror content.

The return of Smiley also answered one of the major mysteries in season 3.

All season long, Boyd’s daughter-in-law, Fatima, dealt with unusual and sometimes disgusting food cravings as her pregnancy progressed with many unanswered questions.

Fatima realized she had an insatiable craving for blood, hinting that the thing growing inside her wasn’t a typical baby. This came after Dr. Kristy, the town doctor, had already told her she wasn’t pregnant.

Fatima later gave birth to a peculiar pod, and the Kimono Lady quickly took it from her. She then vanished into the cabin’s lower level, with Boyd running after her.

In these strange tunnels Boyd can only watch on in horror as the pod grows into a reborn Smiley.

When asked about how Smiley’s return affects Boyd and the town, Perrineau explained that Boyd will try everything he can, but ultimately won’t be able to control the situation. Everyone else will then be forced to cope with the consequences, as there will be no other options.

From season 4 will arrive in the US on 19 April. From seasons 1-3 are available to stream on NOW.
