I’ve recently learned that 11 bit studios is bringing their city-building survival game, Frostpunk 2, to consoles on September 18, 2025. This announcement was made public just yesterday.
Previously, it had been hinted at a console version prior to the PC launch, but we were left in the cold regarding an exact release date. Now, console gamers can mark their calendars for when they too will face the frosty challenges of survival without needing a high-end gaming PC.
For those eagerly awaiting the icy adventure, be sure to watch the console release trailer below:
Alongside being accessible digitally on both Xbox Series X and PlayStation 5, owners who favor tangible media will be delighted to know that 11 bit studios is teaming up with Skybound Games once more. They’re offering two alternatives for those who prefer a physical copy of the game.
The Icebreaker Edition comes with a diorama, along with a digital code for an art book and a novella.
Simultaneously, the Whiteout Edition encompasses all items found in the Icebreaker Edition, plus a digital enhancement offering the upcoming three DLC packs, a keychain, artwork cards, stickers, and a badge.

Both physical versions offer a full game disc, so it’s more than just a decorative item for your shelf; you can actually play the entire game right away without needing additional downloads.
And if you’re an Xbox gamer who prefers digital content, don’t forget that Frostpunk 2 will be available on Xbox Game Pass Ultimate from day one.
More Frostpunk to come

When evaluating Frostpunk 2 for PC, I observed that unlike its predecessor, it challenges players not just to survive but to prosper. Instead of simply enduring another night, you’re constructing a future – collaboratively or in conflict with the communities you are safeguarding. This is a significant advancement, and 11 bit studios largely manages this transformation gracefully.
Interestingly, the original Frostpunk performs surprisingly well on consoles, offering intuitive controls that effectively simplify the interface. I eagerly await the console release of its sequel and am considering exploring the Xbox version when it drops.
As per the studio’s roadmap from last year, two DLC packs are expected to follow the console launch in 2025, with a third expansion scheduled for 2026.
Beyond these expansions, 11 bit studios is also revisiting the original game by creating Frostpunk 1886, a remake slated for release in 2027. This overhaul will incorporate new technology, buildings, and a new Purpose path distinct from Order and Faith. Using Unreal Engine 5, it promises a first look at gameplay later this year. Notably, this remake will also support mods.
Given my affection for Frostpunk, I’m intrigued to see how the team handles managing these projects concurrently. If you’re planning on playing Frostpunk 2 on console, let me know whether you prefer a physical copy or digital playthrough.
