Recently, information has surfaced about how Furious 7 was originally intended to end. The seventh installment of the Fast & Furious series was released in 2015, almost two years after the heartbreaking death of Paul Walker, who played Brian O’Conner. His passing caused delays in production and significant changes to the final movie.
After Paul Walker’s tragic death, his family supported the decision to finish Furious 7. The filmmakers rewrote the ending to give Walker a heartfelt farewell. A new book, “Welcome To The Family” by Barry Hertz – about the Fast & Furious series – shares previously unknown details about the movie’s original planned ending.
The book details how Furious 7 was originally intended to conclude with Dom, Brian, and the team returning to a well-known place, taking down “God’s Eye,” and leaving the door open for future films. This plan changed following Paul Walker’s death.
So, the original ending of Furious 7 was really something. After everything – getting the ‘God’s Eye’ back from Deckard Shaw and even getting awards from Kurt Russell’s character, Mr. Nobody – the team all ended up back at Neptune’s Net, that seafood place from the first movie where Dom and Brian really connected. It was a full-circle moment! But then, Dom makes this bold move and just crushes the God’s Eye, deciding it was too dangerous for anyone to have. They all drive off down the Pacific Coast Highway, and Dom, with a grin, tosses his congressional commendation out the window as the music swells. It was a perfect, defiant way to end the film, really cementing their ‘family’ vibe and saying they’d do things their own way.
Hertz later shared additional details about the planned ending. It would have shown the team choosing their next location by throwing a knife at a map, leaving the decision to chance. However, after Paul Walker’s death, the entire third act of the movie was revised, and this scene was cut.
Unlike Furious 7, which dealt with loss in a very different way, this film concludes with Brian and Dom driving together as they contemplate the future. Brian is stepping away from the team’s dangerous lifestyle to focus on his family, and the emotional song “See You Again” plays as they share this moment.
As a huge Fast & Furious fan, I always thought it was clever how they kept the God’s Eye around! It’s wild to think that in the original plan for Furious 7, Dom was supposed to destroy it. If he had, we wouldn’t have seen it reappear in later movies like Fate of the Furious and Fast X. I’m glad they changed that – it added a cool layer of continuity and kept things interesting!
The original ending of Furious 7 planned to show Dom and his team becoming more official heroes. Instead of continuing as reformed criminals with pardons, they were going to be recognized and potentially employed by the U.S. government, working with Mr. Nobody’s agency.
After Paul Walker’s passing, these plans never materialized. While some ideas might have been salvaged, Furious 7 shifted its focus to create a respectful and heartfelt goodbye to the actor. The film used CGI and featured his brothers to complete his remaining scenes.
Having earned $1.5 billion worldwide and received positive reviews, the ending of Furious 7 is particularly praised for beautifully honoring Paul Walker and his impact on the Fast & Furious series, while also providing a satisfying conclusion to his character, Brian. Although initially unplanned, the final result is remarkably moving considering the tragic circumstances.
The book ‘Welcome To The Family: The Explosive Story Behind Fast & Furious, The Blockbusters That Supercharged The World’ is now available.
