FX has a hilarious sitcom that perfectly blends the best parts of Friends and New Girl, and you can still start watching it now. Sitcoms are consistently popular, with many becoming all-time TV favorites. Shows like I Love Lucy, Friends, and Seinfeld haven’t just shaped the sitcom genre, they’ve had a huge impact on television as a whole.
Everyone talks about how influential Friends was, and lots of shows have tried to capture that same magic. New Girl came the closest – it wasn’t just the best show to fill Friends‘ shoes, but a truly great sitcom, consistently funny throughout its entire run. Now, FX’s Adults is a strong contender, blending the best parts of both New Girl and Friends into something special.
Ben Kronengold and Rebecca Shaw created the FX sitcom Adults, which premiered in May 2025. While critics liked the show, it didn’t become a widely popular hit. Despite this, many consider Adults to be one of the best sitcoms of the last ten years, offering a unique and refreshing take on a familiar genre.
Adults Successfully Modernized The Sitcom Formula
The show Adults centers around five friends – Samir, Billie, Issa, Anton, and Paul – who are navigating the challenges of early adulthood while living together at Samir’s family home while his parents are away on an extended trip. They deal with relatable issues like health scares, financial difficulties, dating, and career setbacks. Though the premise is straightforward, Adults successfully updates the classic sitcom format.
Adults uses classic sitcom features like a group of characters, quick episodes, multiple storylines, and characters people can connect with, all facing new challenges each time. But it also feels modern by ditching canned laughter, nailing the timing of its jokes, creating characters that appeal to all ages, and tackling real-life issues that resonate with a broad audience.
The show Adults accurately portrays the challenges facing young adults today – things like job insecurity, medical bills, and finding affordable housing – and these themes also resonate with older viewers. Despite being a traditional sitcom at its core, Adults feels modern and connects with both Gen Z and a broader audience.
When Will Adults Season 2 Release?
Following positive reviews, the show Adults was picked up for a second season in October 2025. While a specific release date hasn’t been announced, it will first premiere at the Tribeca Film Festival on June 11, 2026. FX has confirmed that the new season will be released sometime in 2026.
Season 2 of Adults is likely to premiere in early fall, mirroring the release strategy of its first season. The initial two episodes of season 1 aired on FX on May 28, 2025, followed by weekly releases in pairs. The complete series then became available on Hulu (and Disney+ internationally) on May 29.
Okay, so I’m really excited about season 2 of Adults. Without giving anything away, it seems like it’s going to dive into what happens after that huge reveal at the end of season one, and how it changes things for the whole group. Plus, you can feel the connection between some of them, and I’m curious to see if they’ll keep living at Samir’s family house. Honestly, I hope they keep what made season one so good – that relatable, funny vibe – and maybe even top it. It’s a show that deserves to be seen by more people, in my opinion.
