Game of Thrones Movie Officially Revealed By WB (& It’s Going to Be Dragon-Packed)

Warner Bros. Discovery showcased several upcoming projects at CinemaCon, including fresh glimpses of films like Supergirl, Clayface, Mortal Kombat II, and The Cat in the Hat. But the biggest announcement came at the very end: a new Game of Thrones movie is officially in development, and it promises to feature plenty of dragons.

The Warner Bros. Discovery presentation ended with a preview of upcoming projects, and fans noticed a hint of Game of Thrones: Aegon’s Conquest. This suggests the studio is continuing to expand the Game of Thrones universe, and this new story – a prequel – will be released as a major motion picture, a first for the incredibly popular franchise.

What Is Game of Thrones: Aegon’s Conquest Actually About?

HBO is planning a prequel to House of the Dragon called Aegon’s Conquest. Initially, it was unclear whether this would be a movie or a TV series, but it’s now confirmed to be a film. If the movie is released as planned in 2027, we can expect more information about the number of films and the cast to be announced soon.

Aegon’s Conquest details how the Targaryen family violently seized control of Westeros. Led by Aegon Targaryen and his sister-wives, Rhaenys and Visenya, along with their formidable dragons – Meraxes, Vhagar, and Balerion – they ultimately united the entire continent under their rule.

Aegon achieved what many thought impossible: uniting six of the seven Kingdoms in just two years. Dorne remained independent, but that didn’t stop Aegon from becoming the first King of the Andals and the First Men. This story has enough material for at least two movies, and possibly even a three-film series, but we’ll have to wait to see what the studio decides.

Currently, there are two Game of Thrones spin-offs being made: season 3 of House of the Dragon and season 2 of A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms. If successful, this could lead to three spin-offs in production simultaneously, which would be a significant accomplishment for the franchise.
