George R.R. Martin, the creator of Game of Thrones, recently shared news about an upcoming prequel series. 2026 is shaping up to be a significant year for the franchise. The first season of A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms was a hit with both critics (earning a 94% rating on Rotten Tomatoes) and viewers, offering a welcome new direction. Following that, season 3 of House of the Dragon will arrive on June 21st, promising the grand scale and excitement fans expect.
In 2026, the world of Game of Thrones will expand beyond television. In addition to two new shows, a stage play called Game of Thrones: The Mad King will premiere, focusing on the events of the Tourney at Harrenhal. Set a few years before Robert’s Rebellion in 281 AC, the tourney featured key figures like the Mad King Aerys II Targaryen, Ned Stark, Oberyn Martell, Robert Baratheon, and Jaime Lannister.
I was so excited to see on Martin’s website, Not A Blog, that tickets are finally on sale! The show will be running from July 20th to September 5th at the Royal Shakespeare Theatre in Stratford-upon-Avon. It sounds incredible – apparently, it’s a huge new stage play set in the world of George R.R. Martin, written by Duncan Macmillan and directed by Dominic Cooke. The synopsis says it covers events from Westeros’s past, taking place in the years leading up to the stories we know from the books – a legendary chapter they’re calling a powerful drama.
The Game Of Thrones Universe Will Keep Getting Bigger

The story of Game of Thrones: The Mad King is significant for many reasons. It centers around the Tourney at Harrenhal, a pivotal event in Westeros history where Rhaegar Targaryen and Lyanna Stark first met and she was named Queen of Love and Beauty. Their connection ultimately led to them eloping, which sparked Robert’s Rebellion, resulted in Jon Snow’s birth, and ultimately caused the Targaryen dynasty to fall.
The upcoming play will dramatically change the world of Westeros, essentially resetting it to how it was at the beginning of Game of Thrones Season 1. The previously released poster hints at this shift – it shows the broken crown of the Mad King, foreshadowing the downfall of his rule.
The play will first be performed for a limited time in Stratford-upon-Avon. If it does well, it’s expected to move to London’s West End and then to Broadway in New York – some dates are already sold out, indicating strong interest. This production is also significant because it’s the first time the story of Robert’s Rebellion has been told outside of the original books or the flashbacks in Game of Thrones. While George R.R. Martin has previously been hesitant about creating a separate story focused on Robert’s Rebellion, it has the potential to be very popular as a film or TV series, so a future adaptation isn’t out of the question.
The world of Game of Thrones will continue to expand beyond 2026. HBO is working on several new shows, including an animated series focusing on Corlys Velaryon and a live-action series about Princess Nymeria. Even bigger, Warner Bros. is developing a live-action movie called Game of Thrones: Aegon’s Conquest. With Season 2 of A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms slated for 2027 and Season 4 of House of the Dragon coming in 2028, the Game of Thrones universe is set for a huge few years.
