In a variety of roles, including those from Game of Thrones to SAS Rogue Heroes, Alfie Allen frequently finds himself portraying characters tested to their extremes. Similarly, in Sky Atlantic’s Atomic, he does not shy away from such demanding parts.
The five-part series, based on the real-life events described in Atomic Bazaar, narrates the story of drug smuggler Max (Allen) and the mysterious figure JJ (Shazad Latif). They find themselves unwillingly embroiled in a perilous operation – the illicit transport of highly enriched uranium from North Africa and the Middle East, a mission fraught with danger that they had not anticipated.
As a cinephile, I’d rephrase that line like this: I’m always lurking nearby, just like a stealthy cat, that’s me – Cassie Elliott, undercover CIA operative, portrayed by Samira Wiley. I’ve got my suspicions about these two, and they’re running around thinking they’re one step ahead. But let me tell you something, they’re no match for me. I firmly believe that these folks are in cahoots with some dangerous extremists.
The determined chase sets everyone on a path destined for a head-on clash, uncovering secrets that suggest appearances can be deceiving, as each character harbors hidden intentions. (The given synopsis tantalizes us with this intriguing scenario.)
Additionally, our roles portray two complex figures who might not be traditional heroes. It’s intriguing to offer such a dilemma to viewers, something Atomic Blonde masterfully executes. Furthermore, the action isn’t just thrilling; it’s layered with characters of questionable morality – and that complexity makes it all the more captivating.
Of course, the subject matter also meant the cast had to be in peak physical condition.
During our preparation, we particularly focused on training with the stunt group,” Latif clarified. “This involved an hour of boxing practice, an hour dedicated to firearm training, and an additional hour of physical conditioning. It’s essential to be in top shape for these sessions, so readiness is key.
The regime was so demanding that Allen leaned on sweet treats to help him get through it.
At first, I found the workouts quite challenging, but after three weeks into filming, I began to justify my need for sweets on set due to all the running around we did. So, while indulging in tiramisu, I didn’t mind.
Latif started with good intentions, but eventually gave in too.
