With the evenings getting shorter, people are starting to think about Christmas and the TV shows they’ll be watching. It’s finally time to consider what we can expect to be watching on television during the festive season.
Young children frequently enjoy adaptations of the wonderful stories by Julia Donaldson and Axel Scheffler, and this year continues that trend.
The BBC and Magic Light Pictures had already announced that The Scarecrows’ Wedding would be made into a special festive film, and we’ve now gotten our first glimpse of the 2025 animated movie.

This charming tale centers around Betty O’Barley and Harry O’Hay as they get ready for their wedding, but their plans are disrupted by the cunning Reginald Rake.
As always, the voice cast features a stellar lineup of actors, including Sophie Okonedo – known for her role in Slow Horses – who narrates the story.
Jessie Buckley will play Betty O’Barley and Domhnall Gleeson will star as Harry O’Hay.
Rob Brydon, well-known for his role in Gavin & Stacey, is returning for his 13th performance adapting the works of Donaldson and Scheffler. He will be portraying the mischievous character, Reginald Rake.
Brydon explained that he’s been fortunate to be involved in all adaptations of Julia Donaldson and Axel Scheffler’s work to date, and he considers Reginald Rake to be one of the most delightful characters he’s played. He described the character as conceited, likeable, and completely untrustworthy – a real rogue! Brydon added that portraying him has been a lot of fun.
Okonedo explained: “I really appreciate that The Scarecrows’ Wedding feels like a story for all time. It’s about love, being faithful to those you care about, and discovering what’s most important in life. I’ve thoroughly enjoyed narrating it, and I’m excited for families to share it together this Christmas.”
The adaptation from last year, Tiddler, attracted 7.3 million viewers and achieved the largest Christmas Day audience for a Magic Light Pictures film since The Gruffalo in 2009.
Fans of the adaptations can catch them all on BBC iPlayer.
