Gears of War: E-Day Pushes Unreal Engine 5 “To Its Limits” In Its Latest Tech Demo

We previously learned that Gears of War: E-Day would feature smooth 60 frames-per-second gameplay and advanced ray tracing in its story mode. However, we were surprised by the innovative ways The Coalition is using Unreal Engine 5 to make the game’s world incredibly realistic and immersive.

We’re impressed by a new tech demo showing Marcus Fenix exploring a small part of the city of Kondora. He walks through an abandoned store, where the demo really highlights the new lighting technology. Shadows and reflections look incredibly realistic, demonstrating the power of ray tracing on the Xbox Series X. The demo features various situations where elements in the environment react naturally to what you do – light even reflects realistically off broken glass. You can even see shadows cast by the lights on Marcus’s armor!

The game looks fantastic both in open areas and during scenes with atmospheric fog effects. The visual details are very well done, and we’re excited to revisit it after finishing our review. It’s still uncertain whether the high quality will last throughout the entire 14-hour story campaign, or if players might have to choose between advanced graphics (ray tracing) and a smooth 120 frames per second in multiplayer. However, based on what we’ve seen so far, we expect it to be a strong release when it launches on Xbox and PC on October 6th.
