Gears of War: E-Day Was Never Meant to Come to PS5, Says The Coalition

Following reports of a PlayStation 5-branded trailer for Gears of War: E-Day causing an Xbox podcast video to be removed, creative director Matt Searcy has clarified that the game was always intended to be an Xbox exclusive. In an interview with Eurogamer, Searcy and brand director Nicole Fawcette confirmed that bringing Gears of War: E-Day to PS5 was never considered, meaning no plans were ever made and subsequently altered.

Searcy stated they hadn’t discussed a PlayStation 5 release for the game. Fawcette confirmed that the plan never changed. Later, Searcy explained why releasing Gears of War: E-Day exclusively on Xbox makes a lot of sense. He said being an Xbox exclusive is “an honour and exciting,” as Gears is a key title for the platform.

Releasing the game only on Xbox limits the number of potential players, particularly as fewer people own Xbox consoles compared to PlayStation 5. Despite this, the developers, including Searcy and art director Aryan Hanbeck, stated they weren’t worried about reaching a smaller audience.

We’re happy more people are playing our games, but we’re not worried about reaching a massive audience on Xbox and PC. We’ve successfully launched games for smaller player bases before, and there are already plenty of good shooting games available on Xbox.

Gears of War: E-Day is in development for PC and Xbox Series X/S, and is scheduled to launch on October 6th. Xbox recently revealed a detailed look at the game through a dedicated Direct video. During the presentation, Xbox also confirmed that both Gears of War: E-Day and Clockwork Revolution will be exclusive to Xbox and PC, with no plans to release them on PlayStation 5.

In a recent announcement about the future of Xbox, the company confirmed that both Gears of War: E-Day and Clockwork Revolution will only be available on Xbox consoles. They emphasized that these aren’t temporary exclusives, and any games already planned for release on multiple platforms will still launch as scheduled. The company remains dedicated to expanding the Xbox ecosystem on consoles and other platforms.

Searcy, Hanbeck, and technical director Kate Rayner recently discussed how Gears of War: E-Day marked the first time since 2015 that The Coalition developed a game in the franchise without using any assets from previous titles. They highlighted the significant role Unreal Engine 5 played in making this possible.

According to Searcy, they used Unreal Engine 5 to modernize Gears of War while staying true to its original feel. The result is a Gears experience that feels intense and familiar, but is completely rebuilt to recapture the heart of the classic games.

Hanbeck explained that the team is focusing on the horror aspects that were present in earlier Gears games. He said they want to emphasize the contrast between light and dark, create genuinely frightening environments, and use dynamic shadows to enhance the atmosphere. He believes the new technology allows them to achieve this level of visual detail, which is crucial for telling the story effectively and giving it the impact it deserves.
