Selena Gomez explained on Instagram that she’d received a lot of messages after a comment she made. She clarified that she would never intentionally hurt her friends and that her comment wasn’t meant as an insult, but simply a response to what she initially saw on a social media post.
She also clarified a previous Instagram Story, where she’d written about showing appreciation for the game and congratulating those involved in the comeback. She jokingly pointed out that it was amusing to see some people suddenly express their support now that the team was doing well.
As Gomez explained, it was all about the opposing team.
I also made a bet with my friends – the ones I mentioned in the text chain. I ended up losing, but I was playfully teasing them afterward. It might seem like I only hang out with those friends, but I actually have others too, though it’s easy for people to assume I don’t.
The “Hands to Myself” singer ended her post by providing some perspective on the situation.
“Also,” she wrote, “it’s a basketball game.”
Some fans assumed Gomez was subtly criticizing Swift, but they might have overlooked the close, long-standing friendship between the two. Gomez recently shared that Swift has actually written songs inspired by her.
She revealed on a recent episode of her husband, Benny Blanco’s, podcast, Friends Keep Secrets, that the song ‘Dorothea’ is based on her own experiences. She described a period of self-discovery during a relationship when she was 15 and the other person was 18, saying that many important life moments – involving family, love, and everything in between – happened as they both figured things out.
She explained that Taylor wrote a song about their relationship called ‘Family.’ It ended over ten years ago, and the lyrics, while not directly quoting them, essentially express the feeling of having big dreams – wanting to be the center of attention, like being in a movie and seen by everyone.
Gomez explained that her partner believed in her ambitious goals, even when they seemed far-fetched, like performing in large stadiums. Now, listening to those early songs brings back memories of those dreams actually coming true, which she finds incredibly touching. She remembers her partner saying the songs were simply about their relationship, and Gomez thought that was a really sweet sentiment.
