Gerard Butler has starred in a lot of action thrillers throughout his career. He first gained recognition through roles in big action films and eventually became a leading man with projects like The Phantom of the Opera, Zack Snyder’s 300, and the Has Fallen series. While he’s known for many exciting, rewatchable movies, some of his films haven’t resonated as strongly with audiences – and that’s become even more common in today’s streaming era where it’s easy for movies to get lost among so much content.
The 2023 film Plane is a good example of a movie that didn’t immediately resonate with audiences, despite positive reviews and decent box office numbers. Although a sequel was initially planned, the project was eventually canceled with no further developments since a discouraging update in February 2026. Surprisingly, Plane has recently become very popular on Prime Video, consistently ranking among the top 10 movies in the US, according to FlixPatrol.
Everything We Know About the Cancelled Plane Sequel

Details about the planned sequel to the action movie Plane are scarce, but what’s known suggests it could have been a compelling follow-up. The sequel, tentatively titled Ship, would have brought back Mike Colter in his starring role, and Gerard Butler was initially expected to make a cameo appearance. However, Colter later shared that Butler withdrew from the project just before filming was set to begin, which ultimately led to the sequel being cancelled.
It’s worth noting that Plane isn’t the first action thriller starring Gerard Butler to gain popularity after its release. While his presence usually guarantees success, the cancellation of Ship might be linked to him not signing on for a sequel – though this doesn’t seem like the main reason. If Butler was only ever intended to have a small role, as initially stated, there were likely other problems that prevented Ship from being made.
I really think Mike Colter deserves his own action film! He was fantastic in Plane as Louis Gaspare – he just has that leading man quality. I’ve been following news about a potential sequel, Ship, but it seems to have hit some roadblocks. It hasn’t been officially cancelled though, which gives me hope. Now that Plane is doing so well on Prime Video, maybe the studio will reconsider and actually make Ship. It would be great to see it happen, even if Gerard Butler isn’t involved this time around.
