Gintama is a hugely popular anime and manga series, and fans are always excited for new projects, even years after the original release. The show is known for its unique mix of compelling storytelling, hilarious comedy, and endearing characters. It’s also a loving tribute to classic Shonen anime, filled with references that long-time fans will appreciate. At Jump Festa 2026, a major anime and manga convention, a new trailer and key visual were revealed for the upcoming remake film, Gintama: Yoshiwara in Flames. Announced earlier this year, the film adapts one of the most popular story arcs from the series to celebrate Gintama’s 20th anniversary. The trailer showcases the improved animation and has fans anticipating an exciting movie experience. Gintama: Yoshiwara in Flames will be released in Japan on February 13th, 2026. While a U.S. release date hasn’t been announced yet, an update is expected shortly after the Japanese premiere.
What Is Ginatama: Yoshiwara in Flames About?
The anime previously covered this story in episodes 139 through 146, featuring some of the most exciting moments and battles in the series. Episode 147 continued the storyline. This new movie will retell the same story, but with improved animation and the original voice cast. The story takes Gintoki and his friends to Yoshiwara, a hidden district known for its strict rules and the difficult lives of the women who work there.
A young boy named Seita tries to steal Gintoki’s wallet, but discovers it’s already empty – and his own wallet is gone too! After Gintoki and his friends catch him, they learn he’s trying to raise money to find the woman he thinks is his mother. They decide to help him, but their good deed puts them in the crosshairs of Tsukuyo, the leader of a powerful group from the Yoshiwara district. Things go from bad to worse when Kagura’s older brother, Kamui, shows up and complicates everything.
He’s a key villain in this story arc, teaming up with the corrupt people controlling Yoshiwara to gain more power. As Gintoki battles against this corruption in the red-light district, we learn more about Seita’s ties to Yoshiwara. You can watch the anime, including the ‘Yoshiwara in Flames’ arc, on Crunchyroll and Hulu.
