The upcoming live-action God of War series on Prime Video is generating a lot of buzz as one of the most eagerly awaited video game adaptations. Instead of beginning with the original Greek mythology stories, the show jumps ahead to the popular Norse saga. A recent first look at Ryan Hurst as Kratos sparked both excitement and debate among fans, and now the creator of the God of War games has shared their thoughts.
After the initial images were released, some fans wondered if they were created using artificial intelligence. A vague response from Hurst only fueled those theories, and the overall reaction wasn’t as good as the studio hoped. While the show itself may be good, first impressions are crucial. Now, David Jaffe, creator of the God of War games, has shared his opinion on YouTube, adding to the mixed reactions but also expressing confidence in the series.
Everyone is clearly working hard, but honestly, the initial look isn’t great. Let’s be upfront: something can be flawed and still turn out well. This image is pretty rough in a lot of ways, and we’ll discuss those issues shortly. However, Ron Moore, the show’s creator, is incredibly talented – a real powerhouse. Despite the current issues, I’m confident the show will be good.
Prime Video’s God of War Adds More New Characters

Okay, I’ll admit, the first picture they released for the new God of War movie wasn’t exactly what I hoped for. But honestly, knowing the incredible actors and crew working on it still has me super excited! They’ve already got big names like Ólafur Darri Ólafsson as Thor, Teresa Palmer as Sif, and Mandy Patinkin as Odin – that really shows they’re aiming for something special. And now even more talented people have joined the project, so I’m holding onto my high hopes for a truly epic fantasy film!
The cast is growing! Modi, a relentlessly inquisitive character, is joining the series, along with Louis Cunningham as Thor and Sif’s middle child. Ben Chapple will appear as their eldest son, Magni, in a recurring role. Island Austin has been cast as their youngest child, Thrud, and will be a series regular. Finally, Evelyn Miller will play Gna, Odin’s devoted Valkyrie commander, leading the Aesir army.
What This Means: God of War Seems to Be Expanding the Game’s Story
The original God of War game in 2018 focused almost entirely on the story of a father and son. While they did eventually encounter Modi and Magni on their journey, most of the Norse gods stayed in the background. Characters like Thor only had a quick cameo after the credits, and important figures like Sif, Thrud, and Odin didn’t appear at all until the 2022 sequel, God of War Ragnarök. Even Gna, a major villain, wasn’t fully introduced until after the main game was finished. Because of this, the fact that the TV series is introducing these characters so early on suggests a significant change in how the story will unfold compared to the games.
Okay, so it’s really cool that they’re fleshing out the Aesir family now. It feels like they’re not just hinting at the bigger world of the Nine Realms, but actually showing us how everything connects. Instead of keeping the gods as these distant, mysterious powers, they’re putting them right in the game, letting us see what everyone’s up to and how they’re playing their own angles while I’m trying to complete my quest. It makes total sense now with all the casting announcements, especially bringing in someone like Heimdall – it’s clear they want us to really know these characters.
The gods who were the main enemies in God of War Ragnarök are appearing early in the TV show, hinting that the writers are creating a separate story focused on Asgard. By exploring the complicated relationships within Thor’s family—himself and his three children—the show will give viewers a better understanding of the gods’ power structure. This will turn the villains from the original 2018 game—who weren’t fully developed then—into complete characters before the show’s heroes even encounter them.
God of War is currently in production and does not yet have an official release date.
If the God of War series were to bring an Aesir god to life, which one would you be most thrilled to see? Share your thoughts in the comments and join the discussion in the ComicBook Forum!
