Beyond just a teaser, Sony Santa Monica revealed over 20 minutes of new gameplay footage for their next installment, alongside interviews with the creative leads, Cory Barlog and Ariel Lawrence, and introductions to the cast. They even showed off some of the combat! While many questions remain about Faye’s journey, this new game appears to be a PlayStation 5 exclusive. Let’s break down everything you need to know, starting with the fact that it’s…
Not a Prequel
It’s clear that a new story starts immediately after Faye’s death, potentially happening at the same time as the events of the Norse mythology (depending on how time functions in this world). Although the team at Santa Monica Studio thought about making a game set before the original, they ultimately decided to continue the narrative from Faye’s point of view, picking up right after the last game ended.
Potentially Saving Kratos and Atreus
Beyond the mystery of the Everywhen – where magic comes from and where it stops – and hints about what magic really is, Faye has a personal reason to care about all this: she wants to return to Kratos and Atreus. She’s discovered another Mask, which threatens her plans for them to begin their important journey. While much remains unclear, for Faye, the phrase “Find your way home” means much more than just a simple promise; it’s deeply important to her.
Faye’s Character
It’s understandable to feel lost and overwhelmed when suddenly dropped into a dangerous, unfamiliar world – and that’s exactly what happens to the character Faye. However, the developers at Santa Monica Studio see her as more adaptable and resourceful than Kratos. She actively seeks solutions, like breaking free from magical containers and asking for assistance from others because she’s more open with her feelings. This approach not only reveals more about Faye’s personality and the world around her, known as the Everywhen, but also keeps the game moving at a lively pace.
Jumping is Back

We understand you might think the return of jumping seems like a big deal – and it has been a long time since we’ve seen it! After over 16 years since Kratos last leaped around Mount Olympus, defeating enemies, it’s great to have it back. It really opens up new ways to move around and fight.
More Agile and Fast-Paced Combat
Before Kratos and Faye got married, they once fought, and Kratos was impressed by her fighting style, calling it “beautiful.” Now, through Laufey, we see what he meant, and it’s easy to understand why. Faye isn’t just quick with air dashes and launching enemies – she uses her agility in creative ways. She can quickly grapple towards opponents for a powerful kick or pull them in close for a swift finish. According to the developers, her ability to move seamlessly between the ground and air created a fast-paced, responsive fighting style that made her a joy to play.
Still Brutal
Although Laufey doesn’t have quite as much graphic violence as the earlier games, it still captures the harshness of Norse mythology. There’s a particularly intense scene where the character tries to dislocate Begtse’s shoulder while a sword remains stuck in their other side. As noted in a recent preview, this game offers a lot more exaggerated and exciting action than its predecessors, but it’s built on the same solid gameplay foundation.
The Golden Hand of the Jötnar

The Everywhen, a realm of magic, is now unstable, though it was once predictable. Faye manages to recover the Golden Hand of the Jötnar, and it’s surprisingly more powerful than before. Because Faye is naturally more skilled with magic than Kratos, she’ll learn new spells as she travels, though it will be hard to surpass what she’s already achieved.
Soul Snatcher
Imagine separating an enemy’s spirit from their body, like Doctor Strange. Now, picture being able to attack that separated spirit, damage it, and then forcefully rejoin it – creating a powerful explosion that harms anyone nearby. Surprisingly, the more you attack the spirit, the more unstable it becomes. This instability can cause it to violently disintegrate nearby opponents, creating opportunities for extended combos and controlling groups of enemies.
Two New Companions
Unlike past games where Kratos fought alone or with just one helper like Atreus (and Mimir offering advice), the new game features two companions – Rue and Phranque. There’s even talk of a possible third ally. But for now, we’re happy with having these two capable partners fighting alongside us.
Phranque, the Cosmic Cube
Jack Quaid, known for his role as Hughie in The Boys, voices a cosmic cube character who’s full of witty remarks. He’s also fiercely protective of the creatures inhabiting Everywhen. We saw one creature held captive, and given Faye’s compassionate nature, it seems likely she’ll try to liberate them. Aside from that, he’s great at throwing enemies up in the air, setting Faye up for powerful follow-up attacks.
Rue, the Enchanted Ribbon
Rue, played by Perlina Lau, is the spirit who protects the sword Faye uses. Despite being made of ribbons, Rue is a powerful ally in combat. She can help Faye by pulling enemies closer, attacking with a whip-like strike, and even enhancing Faye’s spinning attacks. This makes us curious about what other abilities Rue might have up her sleeve.
Customizing Rue and Phranque
I’m really excited that we’ll be able to level up our companions and build our gameplay around what they’re good at! I’m already imagining all the possibilities – like maybe I can focus on making Faye a long-range fighter with Rue, using her blade like a whip. And Phranque? He could potentially lock enemies down or even create a black hole with his cosmic abilities! Honestly, the gameplay we’ve seen so far feels like just a tiny glimpse of everything they can really do.
Sekhmet and Begtse

Even though Faye is incredibly strong, she’ll face serious challenges from opponents like Sekhmet and Begtse. The developers at Santa Monica Studio have hinted at other powerful enemies and massive creatures, including the giant lion Sekhmet rides. Some people think this lion might actually be Bai Ze, but its look isn’t quite right.
The Stunning Visuals
The game initially feels like a classic fantasy world with its lush forests, crumbling ruins, and fluttering butterflies. However, that feeling shifts when you encounter a huge, blocky tower and a campsite built among charred trees, established by Sekhmet and Begtse. Then, a massive observatory appears in the distance, bringing back the sense of grand fantasy. The art style seems intentionally varied – fitting for the game’s themes – and it’s all visually stunning and vibrant with color.
Beyond everything else, the game’s facial animations are incredible, and the combat flows beautifully – even small details like how hair moves look realistic. Santa Monica Studio is creating one of the most visually impressive games we’ve seen on current consoles, which isn’t surprising given their talent and the power of the PS5.
Release Window?
The main question everyone’s asking is: when will the game be released? Santa Monica Studio hasn’t given a specific date or even a timeframe, but according to Bloomberg’s Jason Schreier, that doesn’t necessarily mean it’s far off. He suggests it’s not years away like some other announced games. Before the reveal, a reliable insider known as NateTheHate predicted a release in the first six months of 2027, assuming there are no delays. Overall, it looks like we won’t have to wait too long to play Laufey.
