The 2020 World War II film Greyhound is still doing well on Apple TV, and we’ve just learned some new information about its planned sequel.
As a movie fan, I’m still seeing Greyhound pop up on the charts! As of June 3, 2026, it actually moved up a spot to number 5 on Apple TV’s Top 10 in the US. It’s amazing – the film has been in the Top 10 for over 700 days now, which really shows people are still watching and wanting more. Though, it’s still got a ways to go to beat another movie’s record of 774 days in the Top 10!
Apple TV’s Greyhound is a Fast-Paced & Action-Packed WWII Thriller
The movie Greyhound, based on the 1955 novel The Good Shepherd by C.S. Forester, tells the story of Commander Ernst ‘Ernie’ Krause (Tom Hanks) during his first mission: protecting an Allied convoy from German U-boats. The film also features performances by Stephen Graham, Rob Morgan, and Elisabeth Shue.
Greyhound premiered in 2020, but its release was complicated by the COVID-19 pandemic. Initially, Sony Pictures planned to release the film in theaters, but they later sold the distribution rights to Apple TV, and it became available to stream digitally in July 2020.
Okay, so the release wasn’t exactly smooth sailing, but honestly, everyone – critics and regular moviegoers like me – absolutely loved it! You can tell because it’s still doing so well in theaters. It even got an Oscar nomination for Best Sound, which was amazing, though Sound of Metal ended up winning that one. Still, getting nominated was a huge deal!
The film Greyhound is well-received, earning a ‘Certified Fresh’ rating on Rotten Tomatoes with a 78% approval score. Even after six years, audiences still generally like it, as shown by its 76% score on the Popcornmeter, based on over 2,500 reviews. Critics noted that while the characters aren’t deeply developed, the film’s fast-paced action makes up for it. Many viewers agreed, but some wished the 90-minute runtime had been a bit longer to allow for more character exploration.
Tom Hanks Will Return for the Highly-Anticipated Greyhound 2
Fans hoping for more in-depth character exploration will be pleased to hear that Tom Hanks will return as Ernie Krause in Greyhound 2. The sequel entered pre-production in May 2025, and is slated for release in January 2026. Stephen Graham, Rob Morgan, and Tom Shue will also be back in their original roles.
The cast is growing with the addition of Jack Petten (known for Robin Hood), James Udom (Chief of War), Jonathan Von Mering, Johnathon Schaech (How to Make an American Quilt), and Eric Lange (Victorious). Details about their characters haven’t been revealed yet.
Okay, so I just heard some awesome news! Tom Hanks actually wrote the script for the Greyhound sequel! Apparently, it’s going to follow Captain Krause and his crew as they move from the Normandy landings all the way to the Pacific, and it sounds like they’re going to play a big role in changing the course of the war. No word yet on when it’s actually coming out, which is killing me, but I’m already hyped!
Greyhound is now streaming on Apple TV.
