Even though God of War Laufey features a new setting and characters, it still feels like a true God of War game. Santa Monica Studio aims to blend familiar gameplay with fresh elements, as director Ariel Lawrence explained to GamesRadar.
She liked how easy the original games were to pick up and play, and especially enjoyed performing combos and juggles. But she also appreciated the more realistic and intense, close-quarters combat in God of War (2018) and Ragnarok.
We loved both ideas, so it came down to finding a way to combine them – like enjoying chocolate and peanut butter together. That’s why the team chose Faye as our main character; she could best bring these two elements together. We wanted to see how they would work in practice and find someone who was adaptable and quick on their feet while still being strong enough to meet our challenges.
Considering Faye’s impressive history in Norse legends – she’s fought for giants and even challenged Thor – it’s not surprising she’s so powerful. She’s also joined by some unique allies: Rue, a magical ribbon that pulls enemies closer for attacks, and Phranque, a cosmic cube capable of launching them. These are just a few examples of what they can do; there’s likely much more to discover.
The next God of War game, currently called God of War Laufey, is expected to release in the first six months of 2027, and it will be a PlayStation 5 exclusive. That means fans have a long wait ahead of them! While we wait, you can read our detailed preview of the gameplay and our speculation about the story.
