The game stars Kratos’ wife, Faye, and introduces a combat style that’s familiar yet distinct from Kratos’, highlighting her skills as a powerful warrior. As a Giant and a formidable fighter, Faye brings a fresh and exciting approach to combat within the God of War series.
Players of the Norse God of War games will recognize some combat elements from the God of War: Laufey showcase, like parrying and calling on allies. However, the game introduces many new systems that appear to speed up the fighting, a change players have already noticed from the gameplay footage. From the start, as Faye enters the afterlife known as the Everywhen, her fighting style feels distinctly different than what players are accustomed to.
God Of War Laufey Sacrifices Some RPG Systems For Greater Action Game Mechanics

The gameplay footage of God of War: Laufey focused solely on action, and didn’t show any of the role-playing elements—like character stats, gear, or skill trees—that were present in God of War (2018) and God of War: Ragnarok. While they might still be included in the final version, it’s possible they’ve been simplified to create a more straightforward combat experience.
I’ve been playing Faye, and honestly, her combat feels amazing. It’s way more complex than just button-mashing like Kratos – there’s a real skill to it. I can launch enemies up, then jump and keep the combo going in the air, which reminds me a lot of the fast-paced action in Devil May Cry. It feels like God of War evolved, taking the best parts of the older, more frantic Greek games and building on them. It’s a really relentless, satisfying combat system.
While Kratos will continue to star in games focused on brutal, close-combat fighting, Faye’s style is remarkably different. Her ability to link attacks together feels as polished as the best combat in God of War: Ragnarök, but the magical sword she receives gives her a range of options comparable to Kratos’ many weapons. Faye fights with a graceful, flowing style reminiscent of martial arts films, seamlessly moving between the ground and air. She effortlessly knocks enemies back and launches them into the air, creating a smooth and impactful series of attacks.
Faye’s Combat Style Is More Agile Through Aerial Fighting Styles & Strong Magic

Faye’s fighting style focuses on swiftness and agility. She aims to land many quick attacks before an opponent can even react. While Kratos relies on strength, Faye avoids damage with her incredible speed, and can even use magic to briefly become invisible. As a former warrior of the giants, Faye is a much more powerful magic user than Kratos, enhancing her abilities and allowing her to once battle Thor on equal footing.
Faye’s magic lets her interrupt attacks and seamlessly continue her own, making her combat flow unique. She excels at keeping enemies airborne, which opens up opportunities for creative and extended combos using moves like divekicks and spinning slashes. Plus, Faye can summon ribbons from her sword to unleash powerful area-of-effect attacks, making her effective at controlling large groups of enemies.
Faye’s combat goes beyond simply blocking with her Golden Hand. She can rapidly combine magical attacks, much like her sword combos, to deal significant damage. However, her greatest strength might be her ability to separate enemies from their souls, making them easy targets. This blend of quick reflexes and magic sets Faye apart from Kratos, offering a fresh take on the established combat system in God of War while still feeling familiar.
Stylish Action Gameplay That Encourages Player Expression Will Lead To More Dynamic Combat Situations

Faye’s combat system allows players to express themselves through skillful gameplay, moving away from simply customizing stats with equipment. This layered approach seems to be making boss battles in God of War: Laufey more dynamic, letting players use Faye’s abilities and magic to cleverly outmaneuver enemies. Many players are excited to learn and master the unique ways they can play as Faye.
As players progress, they’ll feel increasingly powerful, rivaling even Kratos himself. The game’s emphasis on fast-paced action reminds me of titles like Devil May Cry and Final Fantasy 16, and I think this focus is a welcome change from the heavier RPG elements of other God of War games set in Norse mythology. Ultimately, I’m hoping God of War: Laufey successfully blends the intense action of the original Greek games with the refined combat of the Norse installments, setting a new high bar for the series.
