Everyone’s buzzing about tomorrow’s State of Play and what announcements it will bring. We’re almost certain to see something from Hideo Kojima, the director of Death Stranding 2: On the Beach, but will we also finally hear about the 2.5D God of War spin-off that’s been rumored?
So, I was chatting with NateTheHate, and he dropped some interesting news. Apparently, when the rumors about a 2D God of War game started going around last year, he heard that Sony was actually thinking about releasing it on multiple platforms. He doesn’t know if that idea ever really took off, but it’s definitely something they considered at one point.
As a fan, when I hear “multiplatform,” I always wonder what it really means – will a game come out on PC and PlayStation 5 at the same time, or will it eventually hit other consoles too? Sony did release LEGO Horizon Adventures on the Switch, but that felt more like they had to because of a deal they made. It’s interesting because Microsoft is planning to put games like Halo: Campaign Evolved and Fable on PlayStation, Xbox, and PC, but so far, Sony hasn’t really done anything like that with their own games.
Rumors started last June about a new God of War game that’s different from the main series. It’s expected to be a smaller, 2D action-adventure game – similar to Prince of Persia: The Lost Crown. This style would fit well, especially since a previous God of War title (Betrayal) was also a side-scroller, though that one was for mobile phones. The new game will feature a younger Kratos and be set in ancient Greece.
It seems this new spin-off was originally planned for release last year, but development has been pushed back to 2026. If we’re getting an announcement soon, the upcoming State of Play presentation would be a good place for it. You can find our predictions for other possible announcements at the showcase, which starts at 2 PM Pacific Time on February 12th.
When rumors about a 2D God of War game began circulating last year, I heard suggestions it might be released on multiple platforms. I’m not sure if those initial thoughts ever turned into concrete plans, though.
